Amrut's latest creation is limited to just 324 bottles worldwide. The process began by casking peated new make spirit, distilled from Scottish peated barley into a first fill PX-Sherry Butt for seven years. After this period the whisky was transferred to an ex-Bourbon cask and a 100 litre refill virgin oak barrel, then aged for a further three years. Here, Amrut have followed an unusual process of moving from Sherry cask to ex-Bourbon which would normally have been done the other way around.

"The result is so gratifying, and one can witness a profile of peated whisky aged for over 30 years in the Scottish Isles", says Distillery representative Ashok Chokalingam. "This is made evident by the phenols which are absolutely soft and playing the hide and seek game while being punctuated by heavy sherry notes, and somewhat kneeled down by the impact of ex-Bourbon and virgin Oak maturation combination. The result is an essay in complexity, and one needs to really look deep down & under to appreciate the mystical complexity of this extraordinary single malt from the Amrut stable".

Presented in a beautiful crystal decanter and custom made box befitting the distinctive nature of the spirit within, each decanter comes with a certificate of provenance.

Other reviews.... This was the final Chairman’s Reserve selection by the late Neel Jagdale, the second-generation chairman of family-owned Amrut Distilleries. It spent the first seven years in an Pedro Ximenez Sherry cask before being transferred into two smaller casks – an ex-Bourbon barrel and a 100-litre virgin oak cask – for the final three years of maturation. The nose has a kiss of smoke along with notes of cherries, caramel candies, hints of white pepper and chili powder, dark fruits, and a touch of oak tannins. The taste is thick, oily, and intensely spicy with chili powder and white pepper balanced by cherry cobbler and a hint of toffee. The finish is long, oaky, and spicy. (June, 2019)
