Liddesdale is a large hill, just a few miles from the location for Adelphi’s new distillery –The Ardnamurchan Distillery – which should be completed by the end of 2013. Rising gently from the southern shore of Loch Sunart, Liddesdale Brae is steeped in folklore. Some speak of the “Devil’s Acre” where the old widow “sell’d her coo to the De’il” (selled her cow to the devil); nothing grows there. Others whisper of the “Fairie Knoll” (a place where fairies live), protected for all time by the “Deaf Shepherd” (a large piece of rock that looks like a shephard’s head) looking down from the skyline.

Tasting note: Liddesdale Batch no. 3 is composed of 4 European casks (ex-sherry) from Bunnahabhain Distillery on Islay. It displays a deep brass / polished copper appearance. A honey and malt top note is followed by heavier scents of fruit and nut chocolate. Warms the insides of the nose with the second, deeper inhalation, which reveals hints of baked citrus that also contributes some freshness to the bouquet. A soft entry leads into a plush, unctuous mid palate where chewy cereals, dark chocolate and sweet spices feature. Perfect balance. Finishes gently warming, dry and vibrant with the fruit and nut chocolate returning in the lengthy aftertaste. Utterly delicious. 46% Alc./Vol.
