Port Charlotte is Bruichladdich's peated variant (although there's the super-peaty Octomore too). The distillery first began distilling heavily peated malt for the Port Charlotte label in 2001. 'PC5' became the first release as a five-year-old malt in 2006. As of 2018, Bruichladdich have introduced four new whiskies under the brand: Port Charlotte 10, Islay Barley 2011, MRC:01, and MC:01. The range also comes with a packaging update: new darkly coloured, opaque green bottles are intended as "a nod to the heavily-peated Islay category". Each expression is bottled at 40ppm / 50% ABV.

For the 2011 edition, two strains of barley were employed (Oxbridge & Publican), all of it sourced exclusively from Islay. The whisky was matured in a combination of first fill ex-bourbon casks (65%), second fill bourbon casks (10%) and second fill French wine casks from Bordeaux (25%).

Notes from Bruichladdich... Hints of salt reinforce the coastal feel. Dry smoke, salted caramel and apple sauce. Then lemon drops, boiled sweets and ground white pepper. The smoke is light on the palate, tar and charcoal rather than medicinal phenols. Towards the finish and the light gentle spirit has an edge of floral sea breeze, marine and refreshing. The sweetness of the oak and the barley are matched beautifully by the dry peat smoke. Islay grown, the barley seems more distinct and brings through the peach and apple typical of our spirit. Non chill filtered. 50% Alc./Vol.
