Tasting note: When Bruichladdich was founded in 1881 by the Harvey Brothers it was a state-of-the-art distillery, built to produce whisky at an industrial level. Even now the distillery retains some its Victorian innovations, like using an open mash tun. This release is from a rare run which is heavily peated, placing it in between Port Charlotte and Octomore, so it's named for a specific style (and after a now closed Islay distillery). For many, Lochindaal is like young Caol Ila - ever reliable, complex and super tasty. This delivers the goods. On the nose, sooty peat follows with lanolin and earthy farmyard notes, later laced with barley sugar, a little brine, iodine, hints of menthol lozenge, lavender, old kelp... the aromatic complexity is superb - as is the delivery. A sweetly sooty fruity/malty combination that's oily, buttery-yet-fresh, with a tongue tingling finish accenting earthy peat, cough lozenge and finally, more medicinal notes along side drying oak. Eminently approachable at natural strength, a decade in an ex-Bourbon barrel with no fancy finishes sees the first-rate distillate clearly expressed. Brilliant. 63% Alc./Vol.
Notes from Gregor Hannah... The tasting revealed a strong peat-reek with sea shells, spice and stone-fruit, apricot.
