The story of Tatiarra is one of the pursuit of perfection. Right from the outset, the objective was to produce extraordinary shiraz equal in quality to the great wines of the world. The 2002 vintage was the first release of Tatiarra wines, and resulted in rave reviews from wine critics around the world. Cambrian Shiraz, Caravan of Dreams and Trademark are the bench mark wines. In order to achieve the extraordinary quality of these wines, each barrel from each vintage is tasted and classified. Any barrels, that for whatever reason, fail to improve the flag ship wines are culled. Winemakers Ben Riggs and Peter Flewellyn are ruthless in their selection, and it is often with considerable dismay (and subsequent financial loss) that the winemakers declare a barrel not worthy of the main blend – This is very much a John West Approach.

Wine lovers throughout Australia have eagerly collected Culled Barrel and been amazed at its quality and price. Let us say, that the material is exactly the same as the flagships, but has by itself not ‘made any contribution’ to the length, depth or complexity of the wine.

The quantity of Culled Barrel produced varies with each vintage – in 2006 the quality of the vintage was such that only 300 dozen Culled Barrel Shiraz were produced compared with 900 dozen in 2005.

Over the years we have, as have many wine lovers, failed to find the shortcomings of this wine – a fact that is reflected in the Auction price of Culled Barrel reaching twice the retail value.

The Tatiarra Culled Barrel Shiraz is an absolute bargain and consistently receives high praise from many wine makers, Nic Bourke famously quoted as saying “I wish my top wine was this good.”

Tasting Note: Opaque black crimson colour with black purple hue, showing impressive cling to the glass wall. The nose is strong with perfumed lift of blackberry, vanilla, violet and black pepper showing powerful varietal character. What follows is unexpected at this price point – a flavour explosion on the palate. Totally mouthfilling black pepper, blackberry and spice overlaid with plum and liquorice. Fine grained tannins, perfect balance with very very long aftertaste.
This wine will sell out in a matter of weeks if not days.
