The Rieussec estate was under the ownership of the Carmes de Langon monks in the 18th century until its confiscation during the revolution leading to its public sale around 1790 as an "object of national heritage". The estate was sold to Mr. Marheilhac, the period’s owner of Château La Louvière at Léognan. The 1855 classification recognized the quality of Rieussec’s soil by ranking it as a first growth Sauternes and Barsac where it steadily transcended into one of the regions top producers. Rieussec was eventually acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984 and is considered by many to be the kindred brother of the prestigiously famed d'Yquem.

The fields of Chateau Riussec occupy one of the highest points in Sauternes after those of d'Yquem which are adjacent, toward the east. The vines cover 90 hectares of the 130 hectare estate with its terroir consisting of gravel interspersed with lime, planting 90% Sémillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle.

Deep gold straw colour with pale gold hue. The nose displays slightly more freshness than the Doisy Daene with aromas of ripe apricot, peach and honey followed by some tropical fruit and cinnamon spice showing wonderful intensity and varietal character. Concentrated palate possessing a viscous texture and luscious mouthfilling flavours of honey, ripe apricot, toffee apple and cinnamon spice. Exceptionally long aftertaste of honeyed apricot, toffee apple and spice.

This is big, rich and long. Still tastes like must. Hard to taste, but should be fantastic. I love the richness and spice. –JS

Very dark with a hint of copper. Very big - lots of weight. Quite different from the rest - a risky note of sweet floral herbiness, something you find in Italian sweet things (candied peel?). Dry finish. Clearly pretty ambitious. Solid and creamy - pretty impressive though it needs lots of time. Very different from the other Sauternes in the UGC tasting.
