Producer note: You can't say that Pierre Gouges doesn't have a sense of humor as he describes 2003 as a vintage 'of extremes. We had frost and then dog days but at least there was no hail. Yields were off about 40% overall and we did a fair amount of sorting. Actually, it wasn't the dried berries that were the problem - rather it was the second generation grapes that formed after the frost that we had to carefully sort out as they weren't ripe. Sugars were very good at between 13 and 14% with pHs of around 3.5, which is sufficiently good that we elected to add almost no acidity. Adding acid is a sport that we don't understand very well and frankly, it's one that we would just as soon not play. Moreover, using dry ice to try and control the temperatures wasn't easy. Christian (Pierre's cousin) and I decided to cut back on the number of punch downs and we did an extremely light pressing despite the pitiful quantities. We were amazed but the alcoholic fermentations were down in only 8 days though oddly, the malos took a long time to complete. At first, we thought of bottling earlier than usual but as the wines continue to improve, now I think we'll bottle as usual in March or April.'

Tasting note: Distinctly ripe but clearly pinot aromas introduce big, intense, rich and powerful flavors that possess wonderful potential. The generous finish is ripe, long and complex with a serious, punchy and classically styled character. This is not an elegant wine but there's plenty of character here and good balance for the vintage.

Dark ruby-colored, the 2003 Nuits-St.-Georges Clos des Porrets St.-Georges explodes from the glass with aromas of licorice, super-ripe blackberries, cassis liqueur, and roasting spices. Packed to the gills with thick fruit (my notes have the word “dense” in all-caps), this road tar and blackberry-flavored effort is medium to full-bodied and backward. Some alcoholic heat and somewhat rough tannin can be detected in its long finish. Projected maturity: 2008-2015+.
