This should elicit more than a few 'oohs' and 'aahs' from Glenrothes fans: A twenty year old distilled in 1996 and matured in bourbon hogsheads until 2017, then bottled at cask strength. Very much looking forward to trying this - if we had enough to justify opening one that is.
1314 bottles produced. Just over a handful available.

Notes from Cadenheads: Nose: Gingerbread, strawberries and lemon bon bons. Grassy and herbal. Taste: Big and oily, faint white pepper, custard tarts and peaches in syrup. Finish: Slightly drying with lingering syrupy fruit cocktail. 51.3% Alc./Vol.

Owners of Springbank, J&A Mitchell & Co. have another whisky business, but it doesn’t make any whisky. Its focus is on the sourcing, maturation and marketing of single malts, rums and gins. It’s called Cadenheads, and it’s Scotland's oldest independent bottler (although a Cadenhead hasn’t been involved with the business since 1904). Hedley Wright purchased Cadenheads in the 1970s, and under his stewardship the Campbeltown based company has followed the “Springbank model”, choosing to grow steadily but slowly. While J&A Mitchell & Co. remains the largest employer in Campbeltown, Wright has no heirs. Now almost 90, he has ensured that Cadenhead’s (and Springbank and Glengyle distilleries) will pass into the ownership of a charitable trust when he dies.

2017 was the 175th Anniversary of Cadenhead’s, and is marked by the release of a range of spirits packaged to show it. As with previous bottlings, the 2017s are notable for their emphasis on individuality and purity. Most of the whiskies are undiluted at their natural maturing strength. None are subject to any artificial processing such as chill filtering or the addition of caramel. All of them are available in very, very small volumes. While this is first and foremost an offer for serious whisky drinkers, the collector appeal is undeniable.
