During the late 1980s, six benchmark expressions of single malt became well known under the "Classic Malts" name. Those who were drinking whisky back then will remember the official taster pack of miniature bottles that represented the various styles from distilleries around Scotland under Diageo's ownership.

Interest in older and rarer malt whiskies in general grew during this period and, if anything, demand for unusual, distinctive, often older, unrepeatable cask strength bottlings is now at an all time peak.
Such bottlings allow collectors, connoisseurs and enthusiasts to enjoy and experience remaining older stocks, and/or unusual expressions of a distillery’s character. To satisfy this demand, Diageo's Special Release series was born in 2001, and the annual collection - with familiar names and some surprises - has been eagerly awaited by enthusiasts ever since. In the words of Nik Keane, global director for malt whiskies at Diageo, the collection represents “some of the most sought after, valuable and collectible Single Malt Scotch Whiskies in the world”.

This is part of the new look 2013 collection on offer - a 1985 vintage Talisker aged for 27 years in refill American Oak casks. Tasting notes from the usual suspects are few and far between for this bottling, however, the blogosphere is alive with praise. Do some research and you might just give in to temptation! With only 3,000 numbered bottles available world wide, we'll reserve this one for the speculators. 56.1% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This 27 year old Talisker has been aged in refill American oak casks, and the nose offers brine, wood smoke, wet tarry rope, slightly medicinal, with the emergence of milk chocolate. Big-bodied, with lots of peat accompanied by chili and smoked bacon, with sweeter notes of malt, fudge, and apple. A hint of fabric Elastoplast. Long in the finish, with rock pools, bonfire ash, and sweet, tingling spice notes which carry to the very end. A powerful beast, even by Talisker standards. 92 points - www.maltadvocate.com (Spring 2014) Reviewed by: Gavin Smith
