1978 Adelphi Glen Elgin 30 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
$799.00 Bottle
  • ABV 46.9%

"One of my all-time favourite Adelphis" - Alex Bruce.

The grand daddy in this latest tranche is a venerable Glen Elgin. Part of Adelphi's 'Archival' selections, we have one only to sell from a miniscule outurn of just 32 bottles world wide. Distilled in 1978 and matured for three decades in an x Bourbon cask before being bottled at a natural strength of 46.9%, and summed up by Adelphi's Managing Director, Alex Bruce as "one of my all-time favourite Adelphis" - a huge statement given the breadth of whiskies bottled. This relic from a bygone era will be savored by a lucky few.

Notes from the bottlers... Dark, brooding gold in colour with a lovely “old rancio” nose to start. Ever-changing, like all good, old whiskies, first apricots with a hint of balsamic vinegar (all taken in an old library), then assorted glace fruits, greengages, over-ripe figs, now macerated fruits and a rich banana cake. Finally, a bowl of slightly burnt rice pudding. To taste, plenty of sherbet, cooked pears, sour plums, caramelized sugar and a hint of mint. On the finish, waxed apples, tobacco pouch and lingering sherbet. A very complex elderly whisky from this Top Class distillery.

Off the radar for most whisky lovers, a major part of Glen Elgin's production continues to be used in the White Horse blends, however (relatively) recently became available as a single malt. The house style remains mellow and sweetly honeyed and only found as a standard issue 12 year old, excepting occasional independents.
