Not a lot of Methode Champenoise from Margaret River appears to be marketed, if in fact made, and so it was with great interest that the Vasse Felix was tasted. Made from the classic "Champagne" varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The wine was surprisingly deep in colour, showing a considerable degree of bottle development - which added to the flavour. Deep golden straw colour, with fine profuse bead. The nose displays the kind of complexity that the depth of colour indicates. Distinct yeast autolysis with some toasty developed aromas. The palate has considerable depth - this is no aperitif style - with full creamy, yeast flavours. The acidity is remarkably fresh (given the colour) and followed by a long toasty yeast aftertaste.A very interesting and enjoyable "big" style of Methode Champenoise - very much an Aussie style, using traditional French techniques.
