Nero is Coriole’s take on the grape variety Nero d’Avola which has its origins in Southern Sicily. It thrives in a warm, Mediterranean climate such as McLaren Vale which facilitates Coriole’s youthful, fruit forward and vibrant rendition of the variety. A small portion of whole bunches are included in the ferment and maturation takes place in older oak for a period of 5 months.
Opaque dark red black colour with a bright dark red hue. Youthful, the nose shows good intensity with freshly crushed ripe dark cherry and liquorice scents intermingling with earthy incense, dried herb and spice notes. Medium weight the palate possesses juicy ripe red to dark cherry and liquorice flavours which meld into elements of earthy incense and infusions of fresh herbs. Finishes bright and spicy with faintly chalky tannins and a medium to long aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

The 2018 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Lagnusa is a well-proportioned expression of this native Sicilian grape that shows equal parts primary intensity with blackberry and cherry contrasted against subtle earthy tones. This is Sicily's Nero d'Avola in all its naked glory. Pair this wine with veal involtini. Drink 2019-2023.

I drove past the town of Avola (Sicily) a number of times this month, yet I never dropped in to see if they had any Nero. Andy Coppard loves Nero, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Good stuff. The jubes, black cherry, black jellybean, iron and solder. Medium-bodied, juicy and fleshy, fine velour tannin, sit back and relax, take a load off, because here’s a wine that’s both easy to enjoy, and pronounce. Satisfying length, with dense fine tannin running it out, and some purple perfume and dried herb. Delightful. Drink 2018-2024.

Finds the point of balance between ample varietal character and medium-bodied presentation. The result is delicious dark berry flavours in a cool fruit flavour spectrum, plus fine, soft tannins. Perfect for an Italian trattoria menu. Drink by 2024.
