Originally a Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro blend, the Izway boys have evolved the Mates into a fresher, lighter style of red to the point where 2018 is the first release of this wine being 100% Aglianico.
Impenetrable inky black colour with a bright dark red black tinged hue. Flowing out of the glass are intense aromatics of dark plum, blueberry, dried cherries, liquorice, dried herbs, earth and spice. Rich juicy flavours of dark plum, dried cherries and inky liquorice fill the mouth backed by firm, slightly drying tannins which give the wine a rustic feel. Elements of dried herbs, earth and spice form on the back palate. Bright youthful acidity provides freshness, the finish chewy yet savoury.

The vintage, coupled with restrained use of French and American oak, has given this wine a head start with its finesse and balance. No theatrics, just grapes from the right place.

A select barrel blend of each of the estate's Nurioopta-planted varieties, partially fermented in concrete and barrel with the addition of a judicious smattering of pressings, this is a complex jigsaw. Thankfully delicious given the effort, cabernet's voice rises uber alles with its potpourri of herbal berry notes and sagacious tannins, compressing the warm climate hedonism of the other parties into a nourishing whole. A rich phalanx of fruit and glossy structural attributes. Drink by 2037.
