Stefano (his mates call him Steve) is the son of an old Riverland winemaking family. Andrea Lubiana founded the winery in 1959. From a modest beginning of a 40 tonne crush in 1962, the company grew to such an extent that by 1975 they were crushing 18,000 tonnes. In those days, 40 different wine styles were produced and a chap by the name of Steve Lubiana was wine maker. Steve, now up market Stefano, has moved to Tasmania and established a vineyard and methode champenoise making facility, and let us say without reservation, he has produced a magnificent Methode Champenoise.Made entirely from Pinot Noir, it is aged in small oak, adding complexity and depth to the base wine prior to secondary fermentation. If you've lamented that it is lack of yeast autolysis character that is driving you to despair about the quality of Australian bubbly, then despair no longer - this wine is loaded with yeast autolysis character. Bright golden straw colour, but no sign of pink. The nose is superb. Yeasty aromas leap out - it's a miracle! - and it gets better. The palate is generous, very creamy with the yeasty quality running right through. Clean, soft acid finish, and long yeasty aftertaste. Steve baby, you're a genius, we can all afford to drink in real style again!
