2022 Penny’s Hill Malpas Road Merlot

Matured in older French oak barriques for a period of 14 months. Dense midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Lifted blackcurrant aromas tinged with distinct mulberry notes sail thru the olfactory senses complimented by some cedary tobacco, dusty earth and spicy black olive notes. Medium bodied, generous red to black currant, mulberry and earth flavours are framed by a sturdy tannin structure. Vanillin cedar, tobacco and spicy dried herb characters lie underneath. Dry, slightly chalky finish with a tightly wound mid length conclusion.

McLaren Vale Merlot from the Malpas Road vineyard planted in 1991. The wine is a deep maroon hue, while the nose offers notes of plums and warm earth, leather and cloves. This is a Merlot from the serious end of the spectrum; it has depth and concentration, with a supple palate, appealing texture and good length. Mulberries and mushrooms emerge on the palate, complemented by a firm finish and slightly grippy tannins. For drinking now and over the next five to six years. Drink 2024-2030.
