2021 Mr Riggs J.F.R. Shiraz
Formerly known simply as Mr Riggs Shiraz, beginning with the 2018 vintage this wine was re-branded J.F.R. as a tribute to winemaker Ben Riggs father. Fruit is sourced from three of McLaren Vale’s iconic Shiraz vineyards; Piebald Gully, Gateway and Martins Vineyard. Maturation took place in a mixture of 80% French oak and 20% American oak with 35% being new oak.
Rich, expansive and incredibly powerful, this is seductive McLaren Vale Shiraz at its finest.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass are intense ripe blackberry and liquorice aromas which are complimented by dark plum, vanillin cedar, hints of dark chocolate, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich and lavish, the opulently textured palate is layered with a thick coating of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, earthy mocha characters, fennel and dark chocolate elements are sprawled across the back half. Expansive and incredibly powerful it possesses silky smooth yet underlying assertive tannins. Finishes splendidly long, plush and seductive. Mr Riggs at his best.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

Other Reviews.....
This is a blend from three McLaren Vale vineyards from three distinct subregions. Each of the vineyard wines was kept separate until bottling. The cooler Piebald Gully fruit seems to contribute to the elegance and vibrancy with its bright fruit characters. It’s full-bodied but refined and elegant, displaying spicy red fruit aromas and a rich, juicy, dark fruit palate. It’s largely been in French oak, but 20% American oak has added a sweetness to the middle palate. Impressive wine and great value in the cellar. Drink 2025-2043.
