2020 Sons of Eden Freya Riesling

The 2020 vintage in Eden Valley produced significantly lower yields, however, offsetting this was the outstanding quality of fruit. Three vineyards made contributions to the 2020 Freya Riesling. The Cranes Range vineyard (60%) and the Roesler vineyard (20%) both situated in the cooler Craneford section of Eden Valley were complimented by a 20% component from the Petney vineyard situated in the higher altitude High-Eden sub-region. The vine age was between 22 to 45 years old.

Ranked number 9 in James Suckling’s Top 100 Value Wines for 2020, this superbly concentrated Eden Valley Riesling is one not to be missed.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense aromatics of lime, orange rind and citrus fill the nostrils followed by talc and a subtle whiff of orange blossom. Bursting across the palate with terrific concentration and power are scrumptious lime and citrus fruits which are underpinned by orange rind, talc and chalky mineral characters. Finishes dry with crunchy acidity and a long racy aftertaste.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

A very finely detailed nose with lemon, lime, light pepper, crushed stones, apple blossom, flint and chalk. The palate has a superb delivery of super long, elegant yet powerful lemon, apple and grapefruit flavors. Fresh and focused finish. Concentrated. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

After a little blip with 2018 and 2019, at least for me, Freya is back in form.
Lime, white flower perfume, a dusting of pepper and spice, green apple. It’s quite tight, but has an approachable nature, lime zest and green apple, stony and lightly chalky, frisky but flavoursome, with preserved lemon and pith running on a long finish. Delicious wine. Has grip and energy, and a subtle come-hither personality. Drink 2020-2027+
