2020 Nicks Secret UST McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon

From a well-known producer that has featured prominently in our newsletters over the last 15 years or so this a secret deal that you can’t afford to miss if you’re a fan of bold, structured Cabernets.

A big bold McLaren Vale Cabernet generously endowed with rich blackcurrant fruits which are backed by a firm structure.

Aged in 15% new French oak hogsheads for 18 months. Superb depth of colour featuring an inky black heart and a very deep dark red black hue. Pronounced ripe blackcurrant scents tinged with mulberry and tobacco unfurl from the glass followed by some dried herb and spicy cedar notes. Rich and full in body, the palate is flooded with concentrated ripe blackcurrant and mulberry fruits which overlay a back drop of cedary tobacco characters, dried herbs, traces of black olive and spicy earth. Imparting a chewy mouth feel are sturdy tannins, the conclusion long, deep and robust. Fantastic value.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Dark purple, this is a richly flavoured warm climate Cabernet from McLaren Vale. There is certainly a touch of oak here, but nicely balanced with dark berries, cloves, leather, a hint of compost, blackberries and brambles. The usual process here is for a small percentage of new French oak to be used in maturation, which normally continues for around 18 months. There is good grip here, abundant but very fine tannins with intensity maintained throughout. Seriously enjoyable Cab, one which should drink well for at least a decade. Drink 2022-2032.

This is splendidly ripe and fragrant with blackcurrant, sweet plum, cedar, subtle tobacco and warm spice aromas. The palate delivers terrific fruit intensity and weight, beautifully complemented by silky texture and fine polished tannins. Stylish and wonderfully composed. Drink now to 2032.
