2001 Conde de Valdemar Gran Reserva

A blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano. Totally opaque dark red core with black tinged edges and a dark brick red hue. Intense ripe dark to black cherry and liquorice scents infused with vanillin oak are followed by dark chocolate, light earth and spice. Medium to full bodied and velvety in its feel the palate dishes up flavours of dark cherries, liquorice, dark plum and chocolatey vanillin oak over some earthy leather and spice characters. Very polished, seamlessly integrated tannins. Excellent length with a long liquorice, dark plum, vanillin oak, earthy leather and spice aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Still on the market, albeit in limited quantities, this shows that Bodegas Valdemar’s reds age beautifully, especially in top vintages like 2001. Elegant, balanced and hauntingly poised, it has lovely tobacco, forest floor, and game notes, fine tannins and a long, sweet, tapering finish. 2019 - 2023.
