Yet another addition to the super-premium bourbon market. Located in the heart of the bourbon capital of the world, Bardstown, Kentucky, the McLain & Kyne Distillery is the smallest family-owned distillery in the region. The companies aim is to reawaken America to what it considers to be the finest distilled spirit in the world – Kentucky Bourbon. Mark Twain was apparently correct when he said: 'There is no such thing as too much good whisky.'. In an effort to further spur on the bourbon renaissance in the country, the company has named its bourbons after the ultimate Renaissance men, Thomas Jefferson and Sam Houston. These individuals reflect the distilling philosophy behind McLain & Kyne’s products - boldness, integrity and character. Pure Kentucky limestone water is sourced for Jefferson's with deep-charred, new white oak barrels employed for aging. Corn, rye and barley are the only ingredients.
Jefferson's Reserve is matured for fifteen years. As a result, by the time a barrel is opened, over 50% of the bourbon has evaporated ( known as the ‘angel's share.’) Following maturation, barrels are hand-selected and then mingled in very small batches of approximately one dozen barrels per batch. Final blending takes place and each bottle from each respective batch is individually numbered.
Tasting Note: Rich, walnut colour with a fruity nose. A huge body with well balanced fruit and spice on the palate with hints of pears, cinnamon, dates, and raisins. Full, long finish. 94 Points - www.wineenthusisast.com
Other reviews... Deep amber cast. Sweet black fruit, brown spice, and fusel nose. Very smooth, almost velvety, on the palate with a medium-bodied palate that finishes with hard caramel, spice, and charred American oak. Finishes on a hot, spicy note.
