Liqueurs simply don't get much better. A Masterpiece.

First released in 1977, this limited edition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the creation of the company by founder, Jean-Baptiste Lapostolle was originally only shared amongst the family, An opulent and powerful cuvee of approximately 80% rare cognac reserves aged up to 50 years, (primarily from Grande Champagne) and the distilled essence of Seville oranges acquires its full intensity after a minimum aging of 3 years in oak vats. To finish this liqueur masterpiece, it comes presented in a charming art-deco bottle, 'hand painted' with orange blossom flowers and grape vines, denoting the ingredients within, copied from a previous limited edition from the 1930s.

Tasting note: Deep polished copper. Dense and layered aromatics include orange marmalade, hints of fig paste and dried apricot overlaying suggestions of new leather and cigar box as flashes of cognac add depth. Astonishes with its thick, cream textured and impeccably balanced delivery filling the mouth with citrus oils and a burst of fresh peel; finish highlights the cognac and oak in a superb cascade of vanilla, dried citrus, rancio and lively spices. Fades with orange cake as the sugars are restrained for a perfectly poised farewell. An essay in precision and balance when it comes to liqueurs. First class. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Amber. Lush orange marmalade, vanilla, and caramel aroma suggest extensive oak aging. A vibrant, super smooth entry leads to a full-bodied palate with explosive orange and brown spice flavors. Finishes beautifully with a complex interplay of the flavor elements and the long dry spicy quality of aged cognac. A remarkable liqueur. 40% Alc./Vol.

This version of Grand Marnier uses rare Cognac reserves aged up to 50 years. Here, the flavor and scent are closer to Cognac than orange liqueur. Look for a rich topaz color, with heady dried fruit notes as well as a clear hit of juicy orange fruit. It's mellow, mouthwatering, and it seems a shame to mix it, though it's been spotted at some restaurants in “ultrapremium margaritas.” 96 points - winenethusiast.com
