Guyana is justly famous for its rich, heavy Demerara Rums, named for a local river. Demerara Rums can be aged for extended periods (25-year-old varieties are on the market) and are frequently used for blending with lighter Rums from other regions. Neighboring Surinam and French Guyana produce similar full-bodied Rums. The El Dorado range of rums, often referred to as the "Liquid Gold of Guyana", are outstanding examples of the Demerara style. In 1992, the company introduced its El Dorado range of rums to the local and international markets. A small allocation has finally arrived in Australia.

The distillery has the facilities to produce every type of rum and has assured supplies of its basic raw material, molasses, from locally-grown sugar-cane. Its distilleries are entirely self-sufficient, with their own capability for steam and electricity generation, water supplies, water treatment, quality control and process laboratories. As well as the most up-to-date distillation equipment, Demerara Distillers possesses a wealth of traditional expertise, with old-style Demerara pot stills, and patent rum and alcohol stills. The last fully operating rectangular wooden Coffey still in the Western world continues to be used for the production of the company's finest spirits.

Tasting note: Pours a deep sienna brown with a gold ochre hue. Superb opening notes include sticky date pudding, creme caramel and hints of liquorice bullets after exposure. A creamy entry leads into a silky, middle weight profile of golden syrup / molasses and sweet spices rounded off with iced coffee and a gently warming finish with the sweetness in check. Delicately bitter, sarsaparilla / honeycombe fade. Old school Demerara that's both distinctive and impressive. Top buy. 37.5% Alc./Vol.
