A single estate-bottled Leyrat Cognac from Domaine de Chez Maillard located in the Fins Bois appellation. The region surrounds all three of the more prestigious crus (Grande Champagne, Petit Champagne and Borderies) and is the largest zone in Cognac (354,200ha) with around 33,000 hectares under vine. The soil here is chalk over a hard limestone base. Its Cognacs typically peak fairly quickly, around 10-12 years, and are used to soften the harder edges of 'better' Cognacs when young.

Tasting note: [Tasted from a 50ml sample] Deep brassy / gold colour. The initial pour releases a perfumed burst of ripe apricot and nectarine; unusually the aroma becomes more subdued after several minutes in the glass as the fruity notes are replaced by scents of vanilla custard, clove and cedary oak. The palate offers an exceptionally pure and silky Cognac experience, beginning light and semi sweet with apricot, pear and raisin flavours, while delicate spices crescendo on the back palate. Soft and gently warming. Seamless integration and harmony. Concludes with a subtle yet persistent aftertaste of vanilla, clove, liquorice all sorts and dark chocolate. Some may expect more depth given the XO classification, but for what it is, Leyrat's Vieille Reserve offers plenty of charm as a femininely styled XO. 40% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.
