Deep Woods Estate has firmly established itself as one of Margaret Rivers brightest stars. Lead by the highly talented Julian Langworthy the winery has been awarded more than 70 trophies and 250 gold medals under his stewardship.

Gloriously fruited, supple and refined in structure this a beautiful Margaret River blend that delivers great value.

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Malbec that was matured in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 18 months. Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Attractive scents or red to black currant and mulberry show excellent intensity out of the glass as they morph into vanillin cedar, tobacco, earthy black olive and bay leaf notes along the way. Richly fruited, the mid weighted palate features supplely textured blackcurrant and mulberry fruits over a cedary tobacco, earthy black olive and spicy bay leaf back drop. A fine grained tannin structure lends polish to the long, refined finish that’s brimming with sublime red and black fruit.

2020 was a glorious vintage and it's here for all to see. Structural, dense, concentrated and broody, the length of flavour tails out through the long finish – in fact, far longer than any $35 wine has any business being. Drink by 2035.

An explosion of super juicy fruit.

Made predominately from 70 year old Grenache vines. Very deep dark red black core with a vibrant dark red hue. Elevated dark raspberry and liquorice scents combine with dark cherry, provincial herb and peppered earth notes. Rich, intense and succulently fruited yet remarkably fresh the palate is drenched with a tidal wave of dark to black raspberry, liquorice and ripe black cherry fruits. Infusions of herbs du Provence, subtle scorched earth and pepper linger underneath. Explosive power and depth. Ripe, slightly chewy tannins finishing very long and super juicy.

Moving to the two tiny production releases, the 2022 Cairanne Marcel Roche is 100% Grenache from the oldest vines of the estate and is still aging in stainless steel. It has a ripe, spicy, savory, medium to full-bodied style as well as lots of Grenache character in its red and black fruits and Provençal garrigue nuances. It has plenty of structure and is going to benefit from a few years of bottle age.

An exceptionally powerful and intensely flavoured Riesling with sizzling acidity lending laser like precision.

Sourced from two sites on the Forest Hill Vineyard with vine age of 20 and 48 years old respectively. Brilliant water like colour with greenish toned edges. Lime and lemon scents jump out of the glass followed by some orange rind, wet steel and chalky mineral notes. Crunchy lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple fruits engulf the mouth providing it with good textural volume which is counterpointed by sizzlingly crisp acidity. Some wet steel, orange rind and flinty mineral characters linger through the long, concentrated and zippy finish.

A blend of Block 2 (planted 1975) and the youngest Highbury Fields site. Its lime and apple blossom fragrance leads the way for the palate with a delicate framework of acidity. The overall balance and length can't be faulted.

Glengyle Distillery Kilkerran 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2024 Release
    Campbeltown, SCOTLAND
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

The Kilkerran brand has been described as "Springbank's big middle finger to the SWA" for trying to screw them out of a regional designation. In 1998 the Scotch Whisky Association decided to cease referring to Campbeltown as a whisky region. Two distilleries (Springbank & Glen Scotia) simply weren't enough. Prompted to restore the Peninsula's reputation, Hedley Wright, the owner of Springbank envisioned Glengyle as a project to cement Campbeltown as a region proper, rather than just an extension of the Lowlands. Its whiskies are now on just about every malt maniacs short list.  Many who were lucky enough to be acquainted with Springbank's output a decade or so ago appreciate that Kilkerran is essentially a slightly less peated version of the same malt - for less dollars. The same distillery team run both operations. There is a slight difference in the production process but the upshot is a lightly peated West Highlander with fresh citrus notes and an oiliness on the palate, plus a little briney, coastal character. Because its profile clocks the range of flavours found in single malt Scotch, it is in many ways quintessential. The 12 year old is the perfect introduction. The 2024 edition was matured in 70% Bourbon and 30% Sherry casks and bottled at their standard strength of 46% without chill filtration. Experience has shown that the best time to buy it is at the start of each allocation cycle while the opening prices hold. Global demand for this distillery is already catching up with Springbank.

Notes from the producers... Initially zesty with citrus notes of lemon cheesecake and an oiliness typical of a Campbeltown whisky. Peat smoke, leather bound books and peppery, spicy notes develop over time, along with sweet sticky toffee pudding. The peat smoke carries through to the finish in campfire embers, with sweet hints of pecan pie and butterscotch.

This Pinot has quickly become one of Tasmania’s most sought after wines with a string of accolades being awarded to past vintages including the Jimmy Watson Trophy for the 2014. The fruit for Kelly’s Reserve is sourced from the middle 12 rows of the vineyard which have had their trellising system modified. The aim is to reduce the yields as much as possible and in turn produce fruit with greater concentration. Each year the Kelly’s Reserve is made from a blend of only the top barrels from the vintage.

Awarded the James Halliday trophy for best Pinot Noir at the Melbourne Royal Wine Show.

Matured for 10 months in French oak (38% new). Deep red to dark red colour with black shaded edges and a bright red hue. Wonderfully perfumed, the nose offers up alluring scents of violets, rose petals, dark cherries, strawberries and anise trailed by whiffs of dried herbs, forest floor and delicate spicy cedar. Rich, expansive and supple, the palate is layered with delicious ripe red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits which seamlessly meld into a subtle anise, spicy cedar, dried herb and forest floor back drop. Possessing a tremendous power wave of flavour that unfolds across the palate like a peacock’s tail, it shows outstanding intensity and features silky smooth tannins. Finishes extraordinarily  long and exceptionally polished.

As I write this, I've just returned from judging at the 2025 Tasmanian Wine Show, where this particular wine put in a stellar showing at the pointy end of the trophy judging. Gee it's lovely. There's not a hair out of place. Beautifully pure red berry and raspberry fruits with great carry of aroma and flavour, spice, some distant undergrowth tones, some cured meats, everything in balance and true with a sapid, saline cadence and fine, powdery tannins. It is just a pleasure to drink. Drink by 2038.

Made from 100% Pinot Noir with 3 years on lees. A fine satiny mousse melts into a straw coloured base with gold tinged edges, the bead fine and persistent. Pear and dried apple scents mingle with brioche, yeast lees, ginger and oily toast like notes. Vivid flavours of dried pear, citrus and baked bread carry a tense, tightly knit feel with subtle oily toast and yeast lees characters lingering underneath. Since their inception in 1843, Krug Grande Cuvée has been their signature wine, and the most important wine they produce each year. Crafting Grande Cuvée only once a year, Krug now distinguish each release numerically, and provide great insight into the detailed composition via their Krug iD site. While these Edition wines are non-vintage, Krug prefers to call them multi-vintage given they use a large proportion of reserve wines in the blend, normally over 120 base wines spanning 10+ vintages. The 171eme Edition is a staggering blend of 131 wines from 12 vintages back to 2000, with the base wine hailing from the excellent 2015 vintage. The varietal mix of the base wine is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Pinot Meunier, and comprises 58% of the blend, while 42% of reserve wines are used from 11 older vintages stretching back to 2000.

    Other Reviews....
Non vintage? Technically so, but in fact there is a new edition every year, this the 171st, based on 131 wines from 12 vintages dating back to 2000. It is composed of 45/37/18% pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier. Krug’s power is an iron fist in a velvet glove, and it’s my favourite champagne.

The NV Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition, (2015 base vintage) is bright and focused in the glass, showing notable tension and tons of class. Citrus peel, white flowers, mint and white pepper all lend remarkable brightness to a Grande Cuvée that is built more on linear cut rather than volume. Krug is always among the first houses to pick. The 171 clearly shows that style. The blend is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Meunier, vintages 2015 through 2000. Disgorged: Winter 2021-2022. Krug ID: 122003

The tightness and tension of this is impressive considering the youngest wine from this is 2015 (hot and dry year), with some wines going back to 2000. Ginger and orange zest. Some creme brulee. It's medium-bodied with apple, pie crust and floral character. It's salty and zesty yet, at the same time, complex and gorgeous. Chamomile and other floral teas highlight everything. Turns rich and flavorful at the finish. Terrific release. Really takes off at the end. Drink or hold.

The NV Grande Cuvée 171ème Edition is a delightful blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Pinot Meunier and boasts an attractive and captivating aroma of dried fruits, pastry, lemon oil, marzipan, spring flowers and ginger, with hints of almond and vanilla notes that become more pronounced over time. This medium to full-bodied wine is precise and well-structured, with a fleshy core of fruit and a sapid, incisive finish. Crafted around the 2015 vintage, the blend comprises 131 reserve wines from as far back as 2000 (42% of the total blend) and is expected to age beautifully over the next decade. Drink 2023 - 2040.

A vivid Champagne, with chiseled acidity and a fine, vivacious mousse creating a buoyant frame for layered flavors of crushed black raspberry, grilled nuts, pink grapefruit sorbet and coffee liqueur, plus fragrant accents of ground ginger and anise, graphite and lime blossoms. Long and expressive on the finish, crackling with a lingering fleur de sel note. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier. Disgorged winter 2022 to 2021. Drink now through 2033.

Such a complete wine. It pushes flavour to the corners of the mouth. Complex and detailed. It’s a wholesome experience. Fine gentle mousse but firm enough to keep your palate energised. It smells of salted shortbread, quince and croissant with almond cream. Then nougat and razor-sharp acidity. Crème brûlée and salt flakes. Crunchy almonds and limey acidity. Oyster shell with lemon, the mineral note. Complete balance. And it’s long and delightful. I forgot about sparkling Shiraz for a moment. On that balmy winter day in Sydney. Drink 2023 - 2033+

Kasia Sobiesiak - The Wine Front

Deliciously balanced, this Champagne is impressive. The iconic wine is in its 171st blend, meaning it combines vintages for the best result for each bottling, not a specific vintage. The 171st essence is dry, while also having fine textured fruit. This is a magnificent wine and worth aging for another year.

Roger Voss - Wine Enthusiast Magazine

Spanning from 1998 through the 2015 vintage, the NV Champagne Grande Cuvée 171 is lush with a kaleidoscope of aromas including orange marmalade, toasted brioche, almond, and ripe peaches. Full-bodied and rounded, it has a hint of warmth on the finish, but it’s highly attractive, balanced, and long, with outstanding depth and richness. This fantastic expression of the Grand Cuvée is gorgeous right out of the gate and will be a great addition for collectors to enjoy over the coming two decades. Drink 2023-2043.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted aromas of pear and lime mix with wet slate, subtle fresh herb and flinty mineral notes. Fleshy pear and lime fruits are delivered with terrific concentration and carry a rounded river stone like textural feel. Stony mineral characters, oyster shell and fresh herb infusions lie underneath. Brisk acidity lends energy to the long stony mineral laced finish. Very Chablis like and great value.

Made by former Giant Steps winemaker Steve Flamsteed, fruit is sourced from the Full Moon Vineyard which is located high in the southern hills of the Yarra Valley on the eastern side of the Gladysdale subregion.  It’s one of the only vineyards in the vicinity, and the grapes ripen remarkably evenly despite its west-facing aspect. “It’s a ripper site for Chardonnay,” according to Flamsteed.

Rich, full and creamy yet fresh, this is an outstanding Chardonnay from one of Yarra Valley’s masters.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a gleaming green tinged outskirts and a watery hue. Jumping out of the glass are aromas of white peach, nectarine and dried honey which are complimented by biscuity nougat, delicate cashew and spice notes. Rich and shapely in its feel across the palate, fleshy white peach and nectarine fruits overlay a dried honey, citrusy nougat, subtle cashew and spice back drop. Finally a high quality, high-octane Macallan for whisky drinkers not collectors, at a price that's way off market standards.

Destined to be one of the single malt buys of the year, this will be nothing short of a revelation for those used to the current 40% bottlings: A contemporary Macallan from first-fill oloroso casks, bottled with minimal dilution and zero chill filtration. No dry, nutty oloroso on the nose, no hints of sulphur; more like dense, moist fruit cake, and loads of it with a little caramello chocolate in tow. Equally expansive on the palate. In fact, huge compared to the official 12 year old - also incredibly moreish - Monte Carlo biscuits, dried fruits, cocoa, balancing spices then dried apricots, candied orange zest and pepper heat at the finish. With water, amplified all-round, fluffy and very, very good indeed. In an age of over-packaged, NAS, celebrity-affiliated Macallans with unjustifiable price tags, you'd expect to be paying over $250 for the privilege here. This should fly off the shelves. Thank you Signatory Vintage! Not stated as cask strength, but 57.1% is near enough. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Truly a lovely move with this series... What, have we said that already? Colour: amber. Nose: back in the day, as the saying goes. Very charming combination, slightly floral at first (dandelions), then moving to accords of jams (mirabelle, quince, apricot) with roasted hazelnuts and almonds, all followed by a coffee and chocolate duet. With water: very lightly smoky, slightly burnt cake, toffee, and a few touches of fern. Mouth (neat): prune and Armagnac to start, then back to the same jams and dried fruits, laced with some lovely pepper. The whole leans slightly sweet, as if there were a touch of moscatel – though there isn’t. With water: not much change, save for some orange marmalade joining in. Finish: long, with clove and cinnamon making an appearance. Comments: impeccable. Deranged minds might consider keeping, once empty, any pricey official crystal decanter just to refill it with this kind of very lovely juice. Philistines! Pithecanthropuses! Squawking popinjays! Comprised of vineyards, cattle pastures and native bush, this estate stretches over 1100 acres making it one of the biggest land holdings in the Yarra Valley. The fruit for this wine was hand picked from select parcels of the estate’s best blocks which have an easterly aspect allowing the vines to avoid the harsh afternoon sun. Fermented in small batches over two weeks with minimal intervention the wine was then matured for 6 months in older French oak barriques and hogsheads.

Gorgeously perfumed, light in body, silky textured and fresh.

Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a vibrant red hue. Captivating the olfactory senses is a gorgeously perfumed nose of violets, red cherries, strawberries and anise followed by hints of dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar. Light, silky textured and fresh, the palate is layered with delicious red cherry, winter strawberry and anise flavours. Infusions of fresh herbs, delicate forest floor and spicy cedar flash across the back half. Polished tannins with a long, elegant finish laced with red fruit. The Woodcutter’s Shiraz is sourced from Torbreck’s younger vineyards located in the prime Barossa sub regions of Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch and Ebenezer.
Fruit is hand harvested and fermented in a mixture of cement, wooden and stainless steel vats for 6-7 days. It is then basket pressed to well-seasoned hogsheads and French oak foudres where it’s matured for 12 months.

Rich, succulent and peppery this is another winner from Torbreck.

A rich, powerful Coonawarra Cabernet with engulfing black fruits and a sturdy structure.

Sourced from Yalumba’s famed Menzie’s vineyard, the name ‘Cigar’ is derived from the unique cigar like shape of Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa strip. Maturation takes place in a mix of new French oak hogsheads, barriques and Hungarian oak hogsheads and one year old American oak barriques with balance in older French, American and Hungarian oak for a period of 16 months.
Dense midnight black in colour with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Intense ripe blackcurrant and liquorice aromas flood the nostrils trailed by some vanillin cedar, subtle earthy tobacco, black olive and bay leaf notes. Rich and full in the mouth with engulfing flavours of blackcurrant and liquorice overlaying a spicy vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and bay leaf infused back drop. Ripe polished tannins have a sturdy underbelly. Excellent power with a long gently chewy finish.

Matured for 16 months in new French oak barriques and hogsheads (17%), the balance in one-year and older French oak barriques and hogsheads. Blackberries pulled from the vine, dark cherries and dried olives. Tahitian vanilla, roasted coffee beans and fruit-and-nut chocolate. Compact boysenberries on the palate with a slew of fruit sweetness cut by caraway seed, allspice and pepper. A sappy succulence to the wine. It's all class and a fine wine indeed.

Opaque with a core of dark purple with a ruby rim leads to a bouquet of complexity and power, baking spices and roasted berry fruits, cacao and cinnamon, violets and a nutty-rich layer of smoky barrel. Dry, complex, powerful and delicious, a wine of texture and flavour, mouthfeel and style. Flavours of dark berries and baking spices wrapped in a flourish of tannins and acidity both adding a tautness and complexity. Well made, lengthy and classic from Yalumba. Best drinking from day or purchase through 2038.

    2022 Yeringberg Cabernets
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Stelvin

The de Pury family have been farming in the Yarra Valley since 1863. Once a famed vineyard in the 19th century, the demise of fine table wines saw production cease in 1921. Guill & Katherine de Pury decided to replant the vineyard in 1969, gradually starting to rebuild the reputation of this historic estate. Today it is helmed by Sandra de Pury, becoming the fourth-generation winemaker at Yeringberg, with her brother David who manages the vineyard. Produced from some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley, the low-yielding vines result in wines of great age-ability and finesse.
The 2022 Yeringberg Red, the 49th release from the estate’s old vines, is a standout vintage and a Wine Companion Top 100 selection. This field blend—determined by the vineyard and vintage—comprises 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec, and 4% Cabernet Franc. Yields were low and fruit quality exceptional. Fermented in small open-top tanks and aged for 21 months in French oak (40% new), the result is a mid-weight yet deeply complex wine. Expect aromas of blackcurrant, violet, and liquorice layered with Christmas cake, olive tapenade, and graphite. The palate is elegant, pure, and finely structured, with a generous, lingering finish.

A blend of 63/16/10/7/4% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/petit verdot/malbec/cabernet franc. That's two great back-to-back vintages for this Yarra Valley and Australian classic. Bright crimson purple. A wonderful bouquet of perfectly ripened black cherries, blackcurrants, cedar (from the already integrated oak) and lavender. With its core of dark fruits and impeccably balanced, fully ripe yet silky tannins, this complex and harmonious wine is destined to join the ranks of the very best Yeringbergs. Drink 2024 - 2035.

Deeply brooding and refined aromas of blackcurrants, graphite, bay leaves, licorice and dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied with seamless tannins, giving notes of blackberries, blueberry bush, mocha, violets and cedar. A very polished and pure Bordeaux-inspired blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, malbec and cabernet franc. Excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Black fruit, cedar, dried herbs and flowers, the smell of damp earth and petrichor. It’s all blackberry, tobacco and dried herb, quite some chew to grainy tannin, ripe tomato acidity, a fair clip of cedar oak, and a finish of good length. This is very tightly coiled as at now, and needs some time to unfurl. It’s savoury and quite meaty, but does have plenty of potential. Drink 2027 - 2036+
