Guided by Woodford's Brand Ambassador, Andy Tsai, in December 2023 the group were invited to choose from three Woodford select profiles. Unlike most WHA releases which have been single cask picks, the Woodford Personal Selection Program asks customers to preference a bourbon that matches their palate, typically based on three distinct distillery 'profiles'. Jack Daniels (also owned by Brown Forman) have a similar approach. No.2 was judged the winner, showcasing aromas of oak shavings, cherry-dark-chocolate and dried peach, complemented by medium bodied flavours of burnt caramel, subtle smoke, orange spice cake and drying oak. True to the Woodford house style, the whiskey was distilled from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley with 180 one-litre bottles imported to Australia. 45.2% Alc./Vol.

Magnificent colour featuring a super saturated inky black core and a deep black dark red hue. Seducing the olfactory senses are captivating blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromas which interact with delicately smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, dark chocolate and peppered earth notes. Rich, silky and concentrated across the full bodied yet perfectly proportioned palate is a sumptuous flow of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits. Undertones of spicy vanillin cedar, subtle scorched earth, dark chocolate and peppered fennel lend further interest. From vines with an average age of 49 years the 2021 Signature is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz with maturation taking place in a combination of French barriques and Hungarian hogsheads (21% of which was new oak) for a period of 18 months.Deep and powerful yet finessed, this is Yalumba Signature at it’s finest.
Inky black heart with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Unfurling from the glass in what is a wonderful show of both refinement and intensity is a mix of red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry scents trailed by some vanillin cedar, tobacco, earth and faint bay leaf notes. Rich red plum, red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry fruits flow eloquently across the medium to full bodied palate. Piquing further interest and complexity are spicy vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco, earthy dark chocolate and bay leaf accents. Deep and powerful yet finessed it has a sturdy fine grained tannin structure that bodes well for longer term cellaring. Finishes very long, sophisticated and elegant.

Yalumba's famous Signature cabernet sauvignon and shiraz blend has a strong pedigree when it comes to cellaring and the 2022 release will certainly carry on long into the future. The fruit density and purity here are impressive. Blackberry, doris plum and black cherry tones, their flow elegant and graceful across the palate with hints of spice, cedar, tobacco, pencil shavings, roasting meats, dried herbs and olive tapenade. Fine-grained tannins are in abundance and there is an extended finish that rolls on and on. It's a super release. Drink by 2054.

The 2022 The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is so pretty—floral, red fruited and fine. This is a beautiful iteration of this wine. Ironically, there's a coastal freshness about it—kelp, brine, crushed shells—given it is nowhere near the coast. It's capacious and mineral and so fresh. The tannins are fine and neat, and the wine has incredible focus and line through the long finish. It's very impressive, potentially one of my favorite releases of this wine to date. It has wholly Barossa fruit this vintage. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025-2052.

Super juicy and intensely flavoured, rich red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and cherry fruits explode across the exuberant palate with delicate infusions of dried herbs, scorched earth and pepper the undercard. This is the younger vine bottling, coming mainly off vines planted in '08. Up to three weeks on skins; maturation in steel and old puncheons and foudre. This is a nice foil to the Old Vine bottling, showing what relatively youthful vines can do on this great site. There’s an open red-berried and cherry fruitfulness, with red florals supported by savoury spice and a foundation of purposeful natural tannin. This doesn’t have the mineral depth of the Old Vine, but the fruit vibrancy and exuberance yield their own rewards. Drink by 2030.

A deep, powerful Barossa Shiraz that oozes opulence.
Matured in French oak hogsheads for 24 months. Dense inky black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Heady dark plum, liquorice, ripe blackberry and dark chocolate aromas waft through the nostrils complimented by notes of earth, vanillin cedar and spicy mocha. Rich and voluptuous, the dense weighty palate is completely immersed in dark to black plum, liquorice, ripe black cherry and blackberry fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, earthy dark chocolate and subtle fennel characters extend across the back half. Ripe and polished it has slightly chewy tannins and a deep, powerful finish that oozes opulence.

Notes on Macallan Classic Cut: Macallan's cask strength 2023 edition was matured in ex-Bourbon American oak and sherry seasoned European oak casks. The Master Distiller comments, at full strength the prominent character of the spirit is pear. When ‘one cut’ of water is added, the strength is reduced to around 40%, and almond biscotti steps forward as the keynote. 50.3% Alc./Vol.
Notes on Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength... Sanaig and Machir Bay are Kilchoman’s two core products, but only the latter has had the honour of an occasional cask strength release. Prospective samples of Sanaig were floated during a 2021 Feis Isle virtual tasting. No release date was ever suggested and the label had to wait until November 2024 to finally get its own natural-strength iteration. Looking at the colour, you might think they've mistakenly filled the bottle with Loch Gorm. That's down to a high proportion of x-Oloroso sherry casks (the remaining 30% are x-Bourbon). Essentially, this release uses the same recipe as the regular Sanaig, however, we can assume casks have been cherry-picked, then bottled uncut as opposed to the regular release strength of 46% ABV. Impressive from the get go, through that’s fairly standard praise for Kilchoman, the bouquet kicks off with menthol rub, iodine, damp earth and wood smoke with bitter peel and dark chocolate in tow. Creamy on entry, then catapults into a full-throttle mid palate attack, keynotes being cocoa, Oloroso sherry and sweet peat. Bracing spices and alcohol give this a drying, bittersweet finale, trailing off with pepper, elastoplast and nutty chocolate. Feels like there's more sherry influence than your standard Sanaig. Either way, it's an absolute blast for Islay fans. No outturn is stated, but the Australian allocations are likely in the hundreds rather than the thousands. 57.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 95 points
Other reviews... From this Islay-based distillery comes an annual expression matured in both sherry and bourbon casks. Smoke on the nose, Grape-Nuts, tasty peat smoke, and barbecue. The palate has heat but is flavorful and not at all spiky, showing pleasant flavors of raspberry compote and an earthy note of pipe tobacco. The finish is long, with red berries, smoke, and peat embers. Smoky, with lively fruit notes that rise above the peat. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

And one of the most talented exponents from here is the Clouet family based in Bouzy. Champagne Andre Clouet have been producing Champagne for over two centuries, and under the guidance of Jean Francois Clouet the wines have never looked better. While his wines are exuberant and concentrated, Jean Francois manages to counter this with immaculate finesse and detail on the palate.
A fine satiny mousse slowly subsides leaving behind a salmon coloured base that has a very fine and persistent bead coursing through it. Attractive pomegranate and strawberry aromas are intermeshed with yeast lees, baked bread and chalky mineral notes. Full and expansive across the palate, strawberry, yeast lees, raspberry and water melon flavours are sculptured by chalky, mineral infused acidity. Nervy feel. Finishes very dry and refreshingly tense.

From the outstanding 2021 vintage, one of the world’s pre-eminent wine critics, Antonio Galloni’s Vinous Media, recently scored this wine a whopping 98 points. To put this into context, they scored the 2021 Penfolds Grange 97 points and 2021 Henschke Hill of Grace 98 points, both priced at around $1000 per bottle. At just $54.99, that makes this wine a vinous bargain by any measure.
Rich, plush and incredibly long yet not overbearing, this is a superb marriage of opulence and finesse.
Pitch black heart with a very deep dark purple black tinged hue. Wafting through the nostrils with great potency are aromas of dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate which are complemented by some blackberry, vanillin cedar, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, plush and incredibly long, cascading waves of dark plum, liquorice, blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate fruit saturate the full bodied palate. Layered across the back half are notions of spicy vanillin cedar and earthy mocha elements. Exceptionally concentrated and powerful yet refined it has seamlessly integrated, velvet smooth tannins. The expansive finish, a marriage of opulence and finesse.

The 2021 Shiraz Avenue to Gold slowly reveals beautifully composed and even aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, red licorice and touches of dried herbs, all wrapped up in a cocoon of fine French oak. Its seamless, satiny texture enhances powerful and energetic flavors that are both youthful and refined. Firm yet fine tannins drive the long, impressive finish. This is absolutely great but needs time to flower. Drink 2032-2042.

Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Delightful nose with aromas of white peach, nectarine, dried honey and cashew streaming out of the glass. Notions of biscuity nougat and spice also chime in for additional nuance. Rich and gently creamed in its flow across the palate, flavours of white peach, nectarine and dried honey are featured over a cashew, biscuity nougat and spice back drop. Beautifully balanced acidity finishing long, refined and shapely.

The palate has good mid-palate intensity, juicy acidity and a long, even finish. A steal at this price, really. Drink by 2028.

Fiano originates from a province in Campania, east of Naples and it’s perfectly suited to the McLaren Vale climate, so much so that it has become the regions fastest growing white wine category. Coriole planted Fiano in 2001 and their first commercial release was the 2005 vintage.
Fifteen percent of the blend was barrel fermented in older French hogsheads.
Brilliant water like core with a distinct greenish tint to the edges. Filling the nostrils are intense lime and green apple scents infused with fresh herbs which are trailed by some wet slate and flinty mineral like notes. Boasting superb concentration and textural volume, the mouth watering palate is awash with crunchy lime, green apple and citrus fruits. Infusions of Mediterranean herbs and stony mineral characters linger across the back half. Crisp acidity finishing dry, super long and scrumptious. A rich, textural style of Fiano that’s incredibly moreish.

The thing about Coriole Fiano, is that it tastes like Fiano. Is this the 20th release of this wine? Well, around about that.
Green apple, green herbs, a whiff of aniseed, lemon peel, and a little bit of seaside fun. It’s juicy, it’s quite savoury too, with some raw almond and herbs, a lively tang of green apple and pink grapefruit, a light chalky grip to texture and plenty of zing and energy, plus some quinine bitterness on a finish of excellent length. Bust out the calamari and chips, it’s game on. Drink 2024-2029+

Raised in tank (75%), old oak (10%) and concrete (15%), with the latter finding increasing favour with winemaker Duncan Lloyd over oak. Brightly fruited and subtly complex, with a savoury, backbone and oyster shell minerality. Lemon pith, tart golden apple, green almond, yellow grapefruit and soft herbs seasoned with fennel seed and white pepper. There’s a seamless quality to this, peppy acidity neatly meshed into the finely-tooled mouthfeel, escorting the flavours through a crisp and very long exit. Drink by 2028.

An estate blend of cabernet and shiraz. There's nothing that the human combination of Duke Ranson in and around the vineyard and the skills of winemaker Robert Diletti can't achieve. It is produced from a selection of longstanding Eden Valley Riesling growers, whose vines range from 10 to 70 years of age, growing in low-vigour, ancient Cambrian soils at around 500m altitude.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with a greenish tinged outskirts. Leaping from the glass are intense lime juice and lemon scents which are trailed by some green apple, talc and chalky mineral notes. Mouth watering lime, lemon and green apple fruits are delivered with terrific concentration over a chalky talc and steely mineral back drop. Crisp, laser like acidity pierces its way through the wines core generating a racy feel. Finishes long and zesty.

Over recent years they have clearly established themselves as one of Tasmania’s best and most consistent producers of the varietal, culminating in their 2014 Home Hill Reserve Pinot Noir taking out the Jimmy Watson Trophy.
Deliciously fruited, supple and expansive - In a word ‘Moreish’
The Landslide Pinot Noir is sourced from newer plantings and is fermented and raised in mostly old French barriques for 9 months. Deep dark red core with black toned edges and a vibrant red hue. Perfumed violet like top notes stream out of the glass trailed by some red cherry, strawberry and red liquorice scents. Infusions of fresh herbs, flashes of rhubarb, forest floor and spicy cedar ensue. Delicious red to dark cherry, strawberry and red liquorice fruits power across the palate and deliver an expansive feel. Notions of forest floor, fresh herbs and delicate spicy cedar lie underneath. Delightfully fresh and supple in its feel it has very polished tannins, the conclusion long and moreish.

They like to keep things simple and minimalistic in the winemaking process putting a real emphasis on fruit purity and to this point use mostly older oak. So named as a tribute to two of the boys grandparents, the 2022 Rob & Les is sourced from John, Barb and Andy Kalleske’s Koonunga Hillside & the Hoffmann Mickans vineyards both located in the north of the Barossa Valley. These two vineyards complement each other perfectly and combined with the near perfect vintage conditions of 2022 have produced a wine that has great depth, richness, energy and personality.
Silky, exuberantly fruited and seductive.

The 2021 vintage is considered to be one of the best vintages ever in Chianti producing wines of power and elegance. Sourced from Antinori’s Tignanello estate, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico, the wine is produced primarily from Sangiovese with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot also included in the blend. Maturation takes place in French and Hungarian oak barriques for approximately one year.
Midnight black heart with a deep dark red hue. A mix of red to black currant scents sail through the olfactory senses with some red cherry, earth, tobacco and spicy dried herb notes then ensuing. Mid weighted the palate is awash with rich red to black currant and dark cherry fruits. Notions of earth, dried herbs, dusty cedar, tobacco and spice lend further complexity. Deep, concentrated and bright it possesses a sturdy tannin structure which lends some grip onto the long, generously fruited yet rustic finish.

Wine SpectatorMarchesi Antinori General Manager Renzo Cotarella tells me that 2021 is the best vintage he has ever overseen. Ever. He prefers it to recent classics like 2016 and 2010. There was frost in the spring, and the growing cycle was very long. This is something that most grapes, and especially Sangiovese, need in order to exhibit aromatic depth and flavor complexity. "This is an exceptional year," he says, citing the inner energy certainly exhibited by the wines from 2021.
I agree, mostly, but not unequivocally. I love the precision and tension inherent to these wines, but I didn't encounter that same breathless vertical lift and linearity that I remember so well in 2016, for example. That was a vintage that managed to effortlessly balance both power and elegance, which is by no means an easy feat. To me, 2021 has the elegance but not the same piercing power that you only get in cooler vintages when sugar and phenolic ripening line up seamlessly. So, while I love these wines, especially the Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori and the outstanding Tignanello, my money is still on 2016 as the better vintage, speaking generally. But zoom in on one wine and my money is on the 2021 Tignanello over everything else.
This is one of the big surprises of this tasting and ultimately represents one of the best buys in the entire extended Marchesi Antinori portfolio. The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori shares the DNA of Tignanello. It is Sangiovese kissed with small parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Of course, the wine is more accessible and open compared to Tignanello, and spiritually, this wine is a Chianti Classico. By that I mean that the elegant minerality of these soils and the sunny flavors of its environs are the determining characteristics. You get wildflower, iris, tart fruit and plum. The wine's enhanced mineral character, with dusty white rock, is what adds lasting complexity and depth. Drink 2024-2033.

The climate is mild in winter, with adequate rainfall, but it is also very hot in summer with little rainfall. This wine represents the new winemaking approach in Puglia, with more moderate alcohol levels and gentler extractions. Negroamaro loves hot and dry conditions, and it grows particularly well in the calcareous, high-limestone soils of the area.
Dense midnight black colour with a dark red hue. Lifted ripe black cherry and liquorice aromas mix with hints of dried cherry, scorched earth and spicy dried herb notes. Rich juicy dark to morello cherry and liquorice fruits flood the mouth with scorched earth, dried herb and spice elements lying beneath. Ripe chewy tannins impart some gentle grip onto the long, deeply fruited finish.

A sweetness from fig hearts carries long on the finish. A vintage that threw a bit of all the weather extremes their way, this is a total success. Suitably marketed as 'The Maritime Malt’, Pulteney’s sweet and fruity style comes with a lick of salt and sea air. It's one of a small number of coastal distilleries turning out a very distinctive style, further distinguished by its extreme northern location. Owned by a relatively small company without the promotional muscle of the major players, many whisky enthusiasts only 'discovered' Pulteney after Jim Murray named the now discontinued 21 year old World Whisky of the Year, (replaced by the superb 18YO). Choose any age statement and Pulteney promises a solid northerner, frequently matured in x Bourbon where you get the best feel for the distillate, but also suited to sherry when handled with care. Apart from the notable saline character, we often find hints of beeswax and light smoke that give it a Clynelish-like feel.
Established in 1826, for a long time the distillery was only accessible by sea. Barley was brought in by boat, the whisky shipped out and many of the distillery workers were also employed as fishermen. The herring fishing industry is no longer part of daily life in Wick, but the heritage of the region is referenced in the packaging of Old Pulteney, the labels incorporating the depiction of a traditional Wick herring drifter.
The twelve year old presents a pale gold colour in the glass and a minor sulphur note is evident beneath the light, salty, peppery malt that leaves one with an overall impression similar to fino or manzanilla sherry; it sweetens slightly with aeration releasing hints of fruit. The medium dry, biscuity palate has a pleasantly spicy burst - over all, dry and saline. The finish is crisp and fresh with delicate bready notes followed by a late coastal tang. In the spectrum of single malts, this belongs at the aperitif end, and is all the more refreshing for its individuality. 40% Alc./Vol. [2007 batch tasted].

It is achingly intense yet is defined by its levity, which is not a common attribute in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine expounds the virtues of the red gravel in which the fruit was grown, via its iodine and crushed shells, cassis and blood, sweet marrow and tobacco. It tastes so clearly of the place, which is a wonderful thing. The back palate swells with flavor, framed by the earth and the attuned oak. This is a tribute to the earth, an ode to it. Plentiful tannins bob along on the current of fruit. This will cellar interminably. It's up there in both quality and feel with the 2010, or so I think. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2051.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateOne of the best vintages in Coonawarra for many years. Little wonder this release of the John Riddoch is one of the best since the initial release from the 1982 vintage. Aromas of violets and red berry with a slightly cherry glaze character adding further intrigue. The palate is medium weight and refined but with tremendous power and persistence. A combination of hogsheads and barriques has been used to deliver the perfect level of oak. One of the best of these I can recall. Drink 2024-2054.
