One sniff and you are standing on the mineral-rich soils of Heathcote, surrounded by the warm, inviting scents of the local bush. This is an evocative wine, of the place, of the dirt, capturing both the natural generosity of Heathcote shiraz and its environment beautifully, artfully. Earth, bush mint, undergrowth, acacia, briar, cassis, black cherry, anise and red licorice join forces with well-mannered oak to seduce. Seduction complete. Drink by 2038.

Jeni Port – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion - Wild Turkey Master's Keep Beacon Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$360. 00Bottle$4320.00 DozenABV: 59%
At the time of writing, Beacon is the final chapter in the iconic Master’s Keep series, confirmed on the distillery's website. Crafted from hand-selected barrels aged in the prime locations of the oldest rickhouses, 10 and 16-year-old whiskeys make up the blend. The latter were distilled by Eddie Russell between 2007 and 2008 while the old Wild Turkey distillery was still active. The 10-year-old components were made by Bruce Russell in 2015, which means they come from the updated production facilities. Besides the age of the liquid, Beacon stands out for its proof: 59% ABV isn't the highest Turkey ever, but it’s close to the top, and (we believe) the highest in the Master's Keep series to date. Beautifully presented, whether you're a longtime collector or just an enthusiast for the finest Bourbons money can buy, this is your last chance to own a piece of the distillery's most storied collection. Grab it while the opening price holds. 59% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... I know there’s nothing in here that should remind me of an old “Dusty Turkey” note, but why is it that I’m finding some flashes of that exact note here and there? All I can tell you is that it’s focusing on the rye element of the mash bill – making each sip taste like there’s easily double the amount of rye – and I absolutely love it. The spice level feels like it’s more than most Wild Turkey bourbons – almost bordering on a rye whiskey. There’s something for everyone in this bottle.... I figured that 2025 was finally the year that Wild Turkey toned it down a bit since Batch 6 of Russell’s 13 didn’t move the needle much from previous batches. But now that I’ve had Beacon, I am saying to myself “are you kidding me?” Wild Turkey has done it again, dammit. And if Bruce’s barrels are responsible for even half the flavor of this release, then the future is looking brighter than ever. I hope to be writing the same thing for *ahem* next year’s release. - thebourbonculture.com

Wild Turkey Jimmy Russell's 70th Anniversary 101 Proof 8 Year Old Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$139. 99Bottle$1679.88 DozenABV: 50.5%"Outstanding... Perfection at 8 years... If there were a single bourbon to best represent Wild Turkey’s signature flavor it would be this bottle." - rarebird101.com
Wild Turkey's latest collector-worthy bourbon celebrates Master Distiller, Jimmy Russell's 70th anniversary at the distillery. The whiskey is an 8 year old with an additional blend of 8 to 9 year old bourbons, hand-selected from a few of Jimmy’s favourite Rickhouses. The bolder, higher-proof expression is one he's always preferred. When many began favouring lighter spirits, Jimmy refused to dilute his bourbon or change the distilling process, embracing a style that he learned from his predecessor, Bill Hughes. That staunch approach helped propel the popularity of many of the distillery’s classics, including Jimmy’s favourite, Wild Turkey 101, proving that a bold Kentucky bourbon would always have a place behind the bar.
Wild Turkey was known as Anderson County Distilling Co. when Jimmy started work. It would soon change its name to J.T.S. Brown & Sons. From his earliest days spent sweeping the floors as an 18 year old rookie, Jimmy moved from job to job as seen fit by his mentor, the pre-prohibition distiller Bill Hughes. Through changes in ownership and shifts in the market, Jimmy rose through the ranks to finally become Master Distiller in 1967. Four years later a company from New York named Austin, Nichols & Co. (a subsidiary of Liggett Myers Tobacco. Co.) purchased the J.T.S. Brown & Sons Distillery to produce their flagship Wild Turkey Bourbon exclusively. The new management kept Jimmy in charge and the rest, as they say, is history. Seventy years working at the same business is an extraordinary accomplishment in anyone's book. It would take a dedicated biography to cover it. "In my eyes, I've never worked a day in my life. The day I do, I'll retire," jokes Jimmy. "Until then, I'm going to continue making the bourbon I love."
Other reviews... This year, master distiller Jimmy Russell celebrated his 70th year at Wild Turkey, a remarkable milestone by any stretch of the imagination (and even more so considering that he still shows up to work most days of the week). In honor of this watershed year, Jimmy’s son Eddie and grandson Bruce created a celebratory bourbon. The nose is chock-full of fresh cherries, cappuccino, vanilla cream, butterscotch, and leather. Baking spice bubbles over on the palate, backed up by toasted coconut and salted caramel, and a lick of bright citrus. Vanilla buttercream, Mounds bar, and black currant end this celebration on a high note. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com
Outstanding. Jimmy Russell’s 70th Anniversary Release is perfection at eight years. It’s everything it should be and nothing it shouldn’t. If there were a single bourbon to best represent Wild Turkey’s signature flavor it would be this bottle. - rarebird101.com
Notes from the producers... Best served neat or over ice, the bourbon offers rich aromas of oak, honey, cinnamon, and tobacco and a palate marked by sweet cream, butterscotch and black tea notes that transition to bitter chocolate, dark cherry and burnt sugar.

The Gippsland Pinot Noir is blend of fruit from the Matthews Vineyard in Berrys Creek and Guendulain Farm in Yarragon. Matthews, planted in 1998 to MV6 on red volcanic soils, is a cool, damp, dry-grown site producing dense canopies. Guendulain, established in 2008 with high-density plantings (10,000 vines/ha) of MV6 and Pommard clones, contributes structure and depth.Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. Perfumed aromas of violet, red cherry, strawberry and clove entrance the olfactory senses with some earth, wild herb and spicy cedar notes also evident. Light in body but simultaneously rich and supple, the palate features expansive red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits over a subtle rhubarb, forest floor, spicy cedar and dried herb back drop. Outstanding power wave with polished tannins and a beautifully balanced freshness. The long, graceful conclusion, highly savoury.

Gee, I do love Gippsland pinot noir. This is beautifully modulated with a deeper, richer fruit profile, although it's far from fruity. In youth it simply shows more primary elements. A whorl of dark cherries, pips and black plums with pomegranate molasses, sweet spices and lots of autumnal fragrance – the earth and damp leaves. Lovely tannins, fresh acidity and, while it will last some distance, lovely now. Drink by 2036.

One thing appealing with the pinots from Bill Downie is that they are immediately drinkable and deliciously so. Another difficult vintage on the Peninsula but this has a balance of aromas, flavours and texture. Dark red cherries, blood orange and zest with sumac and brown spices plus fresh herbs and a pinch of Italian bitter herbs, too. It’s a savoury wine. Tannins and acidity work in tandem to add definition across the mid-weighted palate. Drink by 2035.

At the time, the aim was to produce additional fruit for the successful Wilson Polish Hill River Riesling but the vineyard had other ideas. From the first vintage it was immediately obvious that the DJW vineyard was quite different from the Polish Hill River vineyard. The grapes and bunches were larger and the vineyard produced a spectrum of flavours that had their own unique qualities. As a consequence a new Riesling was born and was named after the single vineyard from where it originates, the DJW.
Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the outskirts. Intense lime juice, lemon and orange rind aromas bound out of the glass with terrific intensity complimented by some talc, green apple and slatey mineral notes. Engulfing the mouth watering palate are concentrated lime juice and citrus flavours which are wrapped up in a chalky texture that carries plenty of volume. Engaging chalky talc, orange rind, wet steel and flinty mineral elements lie underneath. Zingy acidity with a long forceful and highly energised finish.

A vintage that marks an incoming winemaker and a culling of lesser quality fruit. Cabernet and shiraz, the Aussie archetype. Consummate, medium-bodied and savory, with better tannin management than what I recall of past vintages. Bay leaves, currants and iodine, with licorice tannins serving as gentle directives to good, supple length. An everyday claret for the sophisticate, with a strong maritime feel. Drink or hold. Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (1000ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia SelectionKentucky, UNITED STATES$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 45.2%Whiskey Hunt Australia's debut with Woodford Reserve comes courtesy of the distillery's owners, Brown Forman. Guided by Woodford's Brand Ambassador, Andy Tsai, in December 2023 the group were invited to choose from three Woodford select profiles. Unlike most WHA releases which have been single cask picks, the Woodford Personal Selection Program asks customers to preference a bourbon that matches their palate, typically based on three distinct distillery 'profiles'. Jack Daniels (also owned by Brown Forman) have a similar approach. No.2 was judged the winner, showcasing aromas of oak shavings, cherry-dark-chocolate and dried peach, complemented by medium bodied flavours of burnt caramel, subtle smoke, orange spice cake and drying oak. True to the Woodford house style, the whiskey was distilled from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley with 180 one-litre bottles imported to Australia. 45.2% Alc./Vol.

Woods 100 Old Navy Rum (1000ml)GUYANA$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 57%Authentic, high-proof Caribbean rum in a super value one litre bottle.
Guyana is justly famous for its rich, heavy Demerara rums, named for a local river and produced from both pot and column stills. These can be aged for long periods (25-year-old varieties are on the market), but are more frequently used for blending with lighter rums. First served to English sailors in Jamaica in 1655, Woods was created for use by His Majesty's armed forces, remaining a mainstay of British naval life for over 300 years. Now produced at Guyana's Daimond Distillery using black strap molasses and the last wooden stills in the world, the blend contains both pot and (mostly) column distilled rums aged between 1.5 and 3 years. Probably the darkest rum on the market today, this brown sherry to treacle coloured spirit needs time to build on the nose and palate, and despite the mega alcohol is deceptively light on entry, but fans out with fantastic depth, suggesting molasses cake, treacle and liquorice strap before finishing with notes of coffee cake, chico lollies and dark chocolate. Arguably more dry than sweet, without the pronounced 'bitter sweetness' you might expect at this potent strength, it winds up dripping with treacle, molasses cake and chewy oak. The nose is a little shy, and don't go looking for complexity, but it will add a prototypical Demerara quality to Tiki cocktails. Old school sailors will keep it neat or add sweet mixers to taste. 57% alc./vol.

Ask a native where you could sample J.Wray & Nephew over-proof rum, and they will tell you knock on the door of any household. Such is the legendary status of this spirit that it accounts for 90% of rum sales in Jamaica. Other brands produced under the J.Wray & Nephew name are Captain Morgan, Coruba and the renowned Appleton Estate range. Use this product in classic rum punches with tropical juices. Alternate with flavoured rums and liqueurs for something new. Also great in the traditional Mai Tai and Daiquiri.
Other reviews... This is the flagship rum from Wray and the rum ... familiar instantly on the nose, with a mixture of citrus and petrol notes, very aromatic with florals and the raw alcoholic notes one expects from an overproof rum. The body is a bit tougher and astringent, slightly charcoal-dusted but otherwise intense with fruit, both citrus and tropical, with overtones of overripe banana, bubble gum, and a touch of eucalyptus on the finish. Surprisingly approachable despite the heavy alcohol level. - drinkhacker.com
...I’m not a huge white rum lover but this is as good as I have had. It will give a massive kick to tiki style cocktails, where it is very often used. W&N Overproof is very popular and highly regarded amongst bartenders and mixologists. Rightly so as well. The danger in this drink maybe that at 63% its very drinkable. At the price it is also very good value. W&N Overproof needs to be evaluated on what it is. It is a very good white overproof mixer. It’s availability and price makes it a no-brainer to have on hand. 4/5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com
...I have gained a sort of sneaking appreciation for overproofs, including this one, because while it lacks the subtlety of a more refined 40% variation (subtlety? don’t make me laugh…the thing is like a charging brontosaurus on steroids at rutting time), it makes an intense, strong, powerfully tasting mix with whatever you decide to chase it. Try adding cola to a 40% low-ender and then to the White Overproof and try and tell me this one doesn’t have more character, more taste, more…well, cojones. It absolutely is not afraid to charge the gates and get the hell off the reservation. When you drink J. Wray’s clear hooch, reader, there’s no ifs, ands or buts — you know Elvis has left the building; and didn’t just exit, he took off with rocket-powered, turbo-charged steel-toed boots. Shanteh Wale – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionThe 2021 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is a brilliant wine. It is achingly intense yet is defined by its levity, which is not a common attribute in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine expounds the virtues of the red gravel in which the fruit was grown, via its iodine and crushed shells, cassis and blood, sweet marrow and tobacco. It tastes so clearly of the place, which is a wonderful thing. The back palate swells with flavor, framed by the earth and the attuned oak. This is a tribute to the earth, an ode to it. Plentiful tannins bob along on the current of fruit. This will cellar interminably. It's up there in both quality and feel with the 2010, or so I think. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Of all the wines in the Yalumba Grenache collection, for me, this is the value pick. A cracking wine which is seriously good buying. The fruit comes from old bush vines which were planted in 1929 and 1949 in the Tri-Centenary Vineyard in Vine Vale. The two blocks were harvested for the wine, with the first seeing 40% whole bunch fermentation and the second 33%. A garnet/crimson colour, the nose is utterly gorgeous. This is Grenache on steroids. Strawberries and cream, florals, bergamot, spices and cherries. Take everything that is good about Grenache and it is jam-packed into this wine. It also offers that typical Grenache tannin mix of silky and sandy. Showing good balance and length, this is a superb example of a top-notch Barossa Grenache. Drink now and for the next eight years. Drink 2024-2032.

Deep dark purple red core with black shaded edges and a bright purple hue. The wonderfully fragrant nose is singing with red to dark raspberry, violet, red liquorice and blueberry scents. Subtle fresh herb and peppered earth notes are also evident. Super juicy and intensely flavoured, rich red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and cherry fruits explode across the exuberant palate with delicate infusions of dried herbs, scorched earth and pepper the undercard. This is the younger vine bottling, coming mainly off vines planted in '08. Up to three weeks on skins; maturation in steel and old puncheons and foudre. This is a nice foil to the Old Vine bottling, showing what relatively youthful vines can do on this great site. There’s an open red-berried and cherry fruitfulness, with red florals supported by savoury spice and a foundation of purposeful natural tannin. This doesn’t have the mineral depth of the Old Vine, but the fruit vibrancy and exuberance yield their own rewards. Drink by 2030.

A beautifully refined and sophisticated Yarra Valley Chardonnay.
Brilliant pale straw colour with subtle green highlights around the outskirts and a watery hue. Ascending through the olfactory senses are delightful aromas of white peach, nectarine and dried honey which are complimented by hints of biscuity oak, citrusy nougat and spice. Mid weighted and nicely fleshed, the palate features white peach and nectarine fruits over a dried honey, biscuity nougat, cashew and spice back drop. Barrel fermented and matured in puncheons (22% new). No mlf. Bright green gold. A touch richer and more complex than the very good Village Chardonnay. An attractive nose of stone fruits, orange blossoms and grilled nuts leads onto the palate, which has good depth and persistence. There's a little orange pith on the long, refreshing finish. Philip Rich – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionMatured in 500L puncheons for 8 months of which 22% was new oak. Golden peach and nectarine flesh, sunflower and kernel. Lemon aspen and pineapple nectar. Summer frangipani blooms. Like a giving tree this wine bestows without being buxom and relying on oak for its breadth. It’s pure fruit heaven. Picked with free flowing acidity and supported by vanilla cake and grated nutmeg oak nuances. It’s still light on its feet but will satisfy the chardonnay drinker who chooses wine based on taste and substance. Serve alongside a homemade salmon quiche.

Notes on Macallan Classic Cut: Macallan's cask strength 2023 edition was matured in ex-Bourbon American oak and sherry seasoned European oak casks. The Master Distiller comments, at full strength the prominent character of the spirit is pear. When ‘one cut’ of water is added, the strength is reduced to around 40%, and almond biscotti steps forward as the keynote. 50.3% Alc./Vol.
Notes on Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength... Sanaig and Machir Bay are Kilchoman’s two core products, but only the latter has had the honour of an occasional cask strength release. Prospective samples of Sanaig were floated during a 2021 Feis Isle virtual tasting. No release date was ever suggested and the label had to wait until November 2024 to finally get its own natural-strength iteration. Looking at the colour, you might think they've mistakenly filled the bottle with Loch Gorm. That's down to a high proportion of x-Oloroso sherry casks (the remaining 30% are x-Bourbon). Essentially, this release uses the same recipe as the regular Sanaig, however, we can assume casks have been cherry-picked, then bottled uncut as opposed to the regular release strength of 46% ABV. Impressive from the get go, through that’s fairly standard praise for Kilchoman, the bouquet kicks off with menthol rub, iodine, damp earth and wood smoke with bitter peel and dark chocolate in tow. Creamy on entry, then catapults into a full-throttle mid palate attack, keynotes being cocoa, Oloroso sherry and sweet peat. Bracing spices and alcohol give this a drying, bittersweet finale, trailing off with pepper, elastoplast and nutty chocolate. Feels like there's more sherry influence than your standard Sanaig. Either way, it's an absolute blast for Islay fans. No outturn is stated, but the Australian allocations are likely in the hundreds rather than the thousands. 57.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 95 points
Other reviews... From this Islay-based distillery comes an annual expression matured in both sherry and bourbon casks. Smoke on the nose, Grape-Nuts, tasty peat smoke, and barbecue. The palate has heat but is flavorful and not at all spiky, showing pleasant flavors of raspberry compote and an earthy note of pipe tobacco. The finish is long, with red berries, smoke, and peat embers. Smoky, with lively fruit notes that rise above the peat. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

This is understood to be the cask strength version of the Seaweed & Aeons 10 year old Sherry Cask edition, featuring the same smoky Islay single malt, though instead of just 25% of it being finished in sherry casks, the entirety of the whisky was. Around 1200 units are offered per batch, this one landing at 54.9% Alc./Vol. and bottled without chill filtration.
Other reviews... [Batch 2 tasted] This one is full sherry finished. Colour: orangey amber. Nose: a notable gear shift, this is much creamier and displays a more velvety smokiness. Resinous hardwoods, smoked teas, verbena, eucalyptus, tea tree oil and smoked meats. The sherry sits behind the peat and doesn't feel too jarring, it's rather more about wood spice and peat smoke together I would say. With water: softer spice tones, coal dust, bonfire embers and this impression of medicinal herbs. Mouth: a similarly easy arrival, all on soft wood spices, smoked teas, sweet peat smoke, natural tars, wood resins, putty and aniseed. More impressions of herbal cough syrups and things like hessian and wormwood. I like it a lot but it strays very close to being a little too wood-dominant for me. With water: not too sure with water, I think it loses a little definition and the alignment between peat and wood goes slightly awry. There's still plenty of sooty and peaty 'oomph' about it though. Finish: rather long, all menthol tobaccos, bitter herbal extracts, spices, liquorice and tar. Comments: this one veers about quite a lot. Lots of emphatic, peaty pleasures to be had, but for me the wood is a tad too much here. However if you enjoy this rather creamy, spicy modern wood-forward style then you'll probably have a blast. Quite clever wee concoctions these Seaweed things, I would say. 86 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Oatcakes, vegetal peat, hot Ribena, assorted BBQ meats, molasses, clove-studded orange, and just a hint of chocolate mousse. Palate: Cinder toffee, cinnamon, peat still shining through, a slow build of red grape and jammy raisin, with some citrus lift. A subtle touch of singed hay later on. Finish Meaty malt returns, with warm oak in support. The red grape tannins continue and last on the finish. Overall: A top expression that shows what can happen when peat and sherry meet without clashing against each other.

Aberlour Casg Annamh Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Batch 8Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 48%Proof positive that high ABV and zero chill filtration makes a world of difference.
Sheer approachability has helped Aberlour become the most popular whisky in France, where more single malt is consumed than any other country. At around 40%, it's a polite, relaxed and sometimes, slightly wanting tasting experience. As an alternative for those who prefer sherry with a kick, owners Pernod-Ricard introduced the natural strength A'bunadh around 2000. Eighteen years later, Casg Annamh was launched as a French Exclusive in a similar vein (the name translates from the Gaelic as “rare cask”). Also influenced by Oloroso, it's matured in three types of casks: European oak Sherry casks and two different types of American oak . Like A'bunadh, Casg Annamh is batch specific, with about ten iterations to date, some better than others. Whichever you come across, they're all handsomely packaged with a wax seal stopper, while the extra ABV and zero chill filtration makes a world of difference. 48% Alc./Vol.

2013 Dalgety Glen Spey Small Batch 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 50.2%Considered by several whisky writers as "one of the most 'obscure' distilleries in Scotland", Glen Spey would have continued to slip under the radar of malt chasers, had it not been for a handful of favorable releases. Formerly known as the "Mill of Rothes", it was built in 1878 by James Stuart & Co (who later went on to buy the Macallan distillery). Always intended as a filler for blends, the particularity of the distillery style resides in its production method. As with its neighbour, Glen Grant, pot stills are equipped with "purifiers", redirecting some vapour to reflux within the still to produce a less feinty and lighter spirit.
For this bottling, Gregor Hannah has selected a pair ex-port casks. One of the casks is a refill ex-ruby cask but the other is barrique which has been seasoned with a premium ’Super Porto’ wine from the Douro River Valley. Married for a suitable time, these casks balance out the distillate's fruit and spice notes with the secondary maturaiton leaving notes of red berry compote, spiced biscuits, cloves, cinnamon, Turkish delight and black forrest gateau. 681 bottles produced. 50.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Crikey, I had hoped this series was named after jazz bands or something like that, but that's rather the number of different casks the whiskies have been treated with. Ouch! So this time, the 'trio' consisted in first fill Port, first fill bourbon, and first fill sherry. NAS, naturally, but let's be serious, this could work. Colour: gold. Nose: blimey, this works indeed, as Dalmore's trademark oranges are singing loud right from the start. Lovely notes of acacia honey, a few juicy golden sultanas, juicy ripe peaches, a tiny touch of mint, some mirabelles for sure, drops of IPA and custard… It is, indeed, very 'Dalmore' and perfectly fresh. Mouth: we're going down three stairs at least, this is much more on leaves and leather, with a little cardamom, chlorophyll, and really a lot of bitterness. Very bitter ale. We were having high hopes after the nose, but were disappointed. To be honest, this happens with many pedestrian 'entry-level' OBs. Finish: medium grassy, bitter. No marmalade though. Unpleasant leathery aftertaste. Comments: really, the nose was lovely, but as far as trios go, I'm afraid this was more ZZ Top than one of Bill Evans'. No jazz indeed. 78 points. - whiskyfun.com

Evan Williams Bottled in Bond 100 Proof Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATESReduced from $89.99$56. 99Bottle$683.88 DozenABV: 50%"a serious step up from the last time I tasted this... Excellent." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024
According to more than one taster, don't let the age and cheap price of this Bourbon fool you. Instead, get ready to be pleasantly surprised. Like other BIBs, this 100 proof version of the world's second largest selling Bourbon is aged under U.S. Government supervision to meet the standards first enacted by Congress in 1897. Bottled-in-Bond guarantees quality and assures consumers the product is at exactly 100 proof, the result of one distilling season at one distillery, aged at least four years, and clearly labelled with name of the distillery who made it.
Other reviews... a fresh, simple aroma relying heavily on heather honey topped with liquorice. A super salivating delivery with the spices upfront and early... and determined to linger. A satisfying corn lick which does nothing to diminish the good work of those spices or deter the late, light, toasty molasses; a serious step up from the last time I tasted this. A few honey barrels found there way into this dumping. The complexity of the spices is on a different level altogether. Excellent. 93.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

...Some bourbons are balanced or complex; this is an all-around versatile pour with initial notes of lightly toasted oak, brown sugar, and butterscotch. Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 50%"...you can buy me a dozen of these roses any day of the week." - breakingbourbon.com
If you're a Bourbon drinker whose still not familiar with Four Roses, then your time has come. The brand dates back to the 1860s and was one of the few to survive Prohibition, becoming the best-selling bourbon in the U.S. through the 1930s and '50s. Decades later it was an export-only product and became difficult to procure until 2002, when Japanese brewing giant, Kirin purchased the Four Roses brand and re-introduced it to the United States.
The distillery is unique in that it uses five different yeast strains and two mash bills to create ten distinct whiskies based on ten different 'recipes'. The strain used for the Single Barrel bottlings is Four Roses' version “V” which is described as "delicately fruity, spicy, and creamy." The recipe here is referred to as 'OBSV' (60% corn, 35% rye and 5% malted barley) which emphasises delicate fruit and rye flavours. Ages vary, but will always fall somewhere between 7-9 years. Regardless, the aim is to bottle when the whiskeys are deemed to have reached their peak. Each release is individually marked with a warehouse and barrel number which is not predictable and subject to change. It's also part of the fun: No two barrels create identical bourbons, thus the single barrel concept provides the opportunity to appreciate and compare whiskies from different barrels and warehouse locations.
Our tasting of barrel RN 8-4R (and several subsequent bottlings) has found the quality to be consistently high and true to style. Four Roses Single Barrel kicks off with a robust Bourbon sniff; a dense core of vanilla custard and caramel fudge overlaid with peppermint, balsa wood, cocoa and hints of cherry. At 50% ABV, the whiskey is concentrated yet controlled with razor sharp sweet/dry balance; a burst of vanillan oak, honey and spiced peach are offset by a tangy, vibrant finish. Glace cherry is followed by late mint freshness. The poise and length are close enough to perfect, delivering as complete a Bourbon as you could expect to find in its category. That high standard was recently confirmed at the 2024 World Whisky Awards where it was judged World's Best Single Barrel Bourbon, Best Kentucky Single Barrel Bourbon and Best Kentucky Small Batch Bourbon. Brent Elliott, Master Distiller commented "Hand-selecting each barrel is a meticulous process, so to be highly awarded in both the Single Barrel and Small Batch Bourbon categories is an extraordinary honor." More reviews below.
Other reviews... brilliantly flinty nose with the Demerara sugars positively crunching under the sniff. Light golden syrup fits the bill perfectly. An immediate small grain explosion of the very highest calibre. Adorable spices wade into the sugary mix. Though there, the liquorice-hickory combination is happy to take a back seat to the heather honey; Can't get enough of that developing chocolate. The best Four Roses I have tasted in a very long time. Complexity levels are off the charts and the sugar-spice balance just can't be bettered. As breath taking as it is majestic. 95.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

...Full of flavor, regularly available on shelves, and a reasonable price… you can buy me a dozen of these roses any day of the week. I found this bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel OBSV to be spicier than the Four Roses Small Batch, which I normally find to be a subtle balance of sweet and I often describe as a good beginner bourbon. I’d say a good description for the standard Single Barrel offering, is that it’s the grown-up version of their small batch product. The flavor is fuller, the finish is longer... - breakingbourbon.com
...'This big, sweet, warming bourbon strikes all the right chords. Hampden Estate HLCF Classic 4 Year Old Jamaican Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$169. 99Bottle$2039.88 DozenABV: 60%"...young Ardbeg in Jamaica." - whiskyfun.com
HLCF stands for "Hampden Light Continental Flavored", and is one of the marks that are produced at Hampden Estate for those rums with a high concentration of esters, i.e. from 400 to 700 gr / hlpa - depending on your source. Despite its potency, the profile here is relatively relaxed. Fruit-forward in the initial inhalations, moving from ripe papaya to overripe bananas, countered by a bitter dark chocolate note, the theme continues in a supple delivery with an unmistakably Jamaican stamp; dried pineapple, mango chews, pepper heat and a mild spike of alcohol are followed by residual notes of candle wax and struck match as well as more creamy mango and 'funk' that serves to heighten the experience. Fully tropically aged for four years with nothing added before bottling at 60%, it's another wonderfully expressive Hampden that resonates a sense of place. Very limited stocks.
Other reviews... There used to be an excellent 7 yo 'Overproof' at 60% vol. but it looks like this new one's lost any age statements. (UPDATE it's a 4 yo 2017). HLCF means 500-700 grams esters per HLPA. Colour: white wine. Nose: once again, this has far more brine and acetone, more earth as well, olive oil, tarragon, a really salty and acidic style on the nose but at 60% it's hard to get a proper full picture. With water: a lovely earthiness and some big rubber. New wellies, all sizes, plus touches of strawberry gums, a thing that's related to some yeasts and that would go away over the years, I've been told. Nutshell, pears and strawberries mean really young spirit. Mouth (neat): very pungent, very salty, with echoes of the most extreme finos de Jerez. With water: pure brine, liquorice, lemon and tar, perhaps a little minimalistic but we do enjoy Bauhaus sprits. Finish: long and even saltier. Rubbery signature, with tinned anchovies. Comments: young Ardbeg in Jamaica. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

High West Barrel Select PX Sherry Finish Straight Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia SelectionPark City, Utah, UNITED STATES$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 49.6%Single malt Scotch drinkers will be familiar with this increasingly popular finishing that adds notes of dates, honey and chocolate to whisky: Pedro Ximenez (aka sweet sherry) is now catching on in America, and Whisky Hunt have landed a very nice example. Blended from 8-10 year old sourced whiskeys (both corn heavy), the combination spent its last ten months in an x-sherry barrel. It still tastes like Bourbon, but not quite as you know it. For a start, the nose is thicker, deeper and more layered than most bourbons - closer to a single malt - with dates and caramel over fresher mandarine peel and orange spice cake. The palate mirrors the aromas in a viscous entry; dates and light honey build, followed by drier notes of cinnamon and white pepper. Although the finish is less pronounced, it’s also more nuanced as cocoa and a little bitter peel enter to cap things off. This is well structured - the sherry adding depth and just a little extra sweetness, while the woody and spicy notes you expect from American whiskey remain intact. 156 bottles have been imported at 49.6% Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 30ml sample.
Notes from the importers... Nose: Aromas of apple, cacao nibs and maple syrup offer a sweet and balanced nose. Palate: Flavourful on the palate, with cherry woodsmoke, dates, baking spices and notes of black tea. Finish: Cherry, spices, dark chocolate. Derived Mashbill: 70% corn, 16% wheat, 14% malted barley (TN Whiskey from Tennessee Distilling); and 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley (from MGP).

2014 Lady of the Glen Ardmore Single Cask #944 10 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 57.1%The famously peated Highlander gets a first-fill oloroso finish. Shy, fruity and floral-soft to start, faint phenols mingle with the sherry to give the impression of roasted nuts and sweet hay. Flips on the palate delivering a wonderfully textural, mouth-filling malt, laced with chimney soot, the oily residue leaves way for a fruity-malt-forward experience, and as the peat accentuates over time, the complexity keeps you coming back. Out of the ordinary. 313 bottles at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... Chocolate raisin, coffee grounds, honey on toast.

2023 Ministry of Clouds RieslingClare Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$29. 99Bottle$359.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2024-2030)ABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinAfter almost three decades of shared experience in the wine industry, Bernice Ong and Julian Forwood decided to have a crack at their own venture sourcing fruit mainly from high quality vineyards in McLaren Vale to produce wines under their Ministry of Clouds label. Further broadening their portfolio they also added other varieties including Riesling from the Clare Valley.
2023 was the third year in a row to experience a cool growing season in the Clare Valley resulting in intensely flavoured Rieslings with healthy natural acidity and exceptional length. 93% of the grapes were sourced from the terrarossa/ red loam laid over limestone of the renowned Watervale subregion often referred to as "The Golden Mile", with picking times staggered to retain natural acidity. The balance was sourced from the lean, hungry and rocky soils characteristic of the cooler and later ripening hills of Penwortham.
A glorious explosion of scrumptious lime and citrus fruit.
Surrounding the brilliant water like core are distinct highlights of green. Intense aromas of lime, citrus and orange rind soar out the glass combining with talc, green apple and chalky mineral notes along the way. The explosive, super scrumptious palate sees lime and citrus fruits burst across it with terrific force, concentration and textural volume. Green apple, orange rind, chalky talc and flinty mineral characters ensue. Juicy, mouth watering acidity finishing exceptionally long, pure and crunchy.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Watervale and Penwortham. I sat down to taste these wines with co-winemaker Julian Forwood, and I said, this smells of lavender, and he was quite happy about that.
Pretty, perfumed, lavender, and pink grapefruit, lime. Juicy, firm powdery texture, pure and long, with a cinch of refreshing tonic bitterness. The mouth-feel of it is excellent, but not at the expense of purity and classic expression of Clare Riesling. Top shelf. Drink 2023-2033+

Mortlach The Katana's Edge (Special Release 2023) Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $349.99$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 58%Artists were commissioned to create artwork for each of the Diageo Special Releases in 2023, the labels aspiring to be “visual tasting notes, placing the expression at the centre of the experience and exploring the flavours that emerge from the local spirit casks.” In the example of Mortlach, it was finished in ex-Kanosuke casks (and x-Pinot Noir casks) with artwork by Japanese illustrator, Kouzou Sakia. A typically chewy, brawny Mortlach sporting flavours of digestif biscuits, Monte Carlos and hints of lamingtons, like several others in this series, the alcohol is a little piercing without water. Keeping in mind that our sample was just 20ml, the overall impression was that the wine maturation doesn't really complement the distillate, which usually works best from sherry casks. 58% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... This is a proper Mortlach, with plenty of muscle behind the beautiful sweet fruity complexity. Fragrant spices, cherry syrup, Red Vines, jellied fruit, ripe melon, hard candies, and dried pear aromas. Flavors of sweet vanilla, savory baked ham, baked apple, citrus peel, layers of spice, dried fruits, creamy fondant, milk chocolate, and peppermint oil. The finish gives you a warm glow down to your toes. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Delightful red to black currant, mulberry and subtle violet scents flow from the glass with plenty of intensity trailed by vanillin cedar, delicate earthy tobacco and bay leaf notes. Rich red to black currant, red liquorice and mulberry fruits decorate the mid weighted palate and carry with them a silky feel. Exceptionally polished tannins are seamlessly integrated within the wines structure. Showing ample freshness, notions of red cherry, vanillin cedar, light tobacco and bay leaf lie underneath. A refined and understated Moss Wood, finishing long and powerful yet eloquent.

One of Australia’s great cabernets. This from a cooler season highlights and accentuates the typical bright red fruits and blue fruit mix, especially on the nose. It’s aromatic and perfumed with an African violet scent. The palate as always is so exquisitely balanced and refined. Since 1989 the cabernet has been augmented with the floral bright fruit of cabernet franc and the darker robust black fruits of petit verdot. The palate delivers with a gentle restraint yet there is power deep within. The chalky tannins define a long and focussed finish. A deceptive medium bodied wine that will cellar for many years.

Ray JordanDeep garnet red in the glass, very youthful, inky and opaque. Lovely lifted aromas of cassis, bramble, dried herbs, pencil shavings and nutty oak, wonderfully complex and incredibly evocative. Powerful on the palate, lashings of blackcurrant, mulberry, blackberry and cedar. This is quintessential Margaret River cabernet, not too heavy or angular, just the right amount of sinewy, shapely tannin working superbly with a very pure drive of fruit and delivering fabulous length. Destined for a long and glorious life.

Aaron Brasher – The Real ReviewA wine of stunning presence, the engaging bouquet shows dark berry, thyme, star anise, rich floral and cedar characters. The palate is both concentrated and seamless with outstanding weight and depth, wonderfully framed by finely infused chalky tannins. This is symphonic with grace and style, promising to evolve magnificently. At its best: 2029 to 2046.

The Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is always one of Margaret River’s best and this latest release is no exception. From the sub-region of Wilyabrup, the blend is 95% Cabernet, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Not the easiest vintage in the region, the team overcame any and all obstacles. Maturation was in 228 litre French oak barrels, 16% of which were new. Deep garnet, this is an immaculate and classic Margaret River Cabernet. Aromas weave through florals, cassis, soy, aniseed, blackfruits, beefstock and graphite. An elegant style, there is good energy here, with serious focus and an immaculate balance, as well as a lovely lingering finish. The palate sees more chocolate and cherry notes emerging. Silky tannins and very good length. Drink over the next ten to twenty years.

2022 Mr Riggs Outpost Coonawarra Cabernet - Last StocksCoonawarra, South Australia, AUSTRALIAReduced from $21.99$19. 99Bottle$239.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2024-2032)ABV: 14.5%Closure: StelvinBen Riggs sourced the fruit for this excellent Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Coonawarra’s top growers - Michael Wetherall’s, Wetherall Estate. From two premium vineyards on the estate that are a combination of terra rossa and sandy loam soils, the sites are located at the northern end of the region and are traditionally some of the earlier ripening blocks that deliver lower yields but excellent concentration. Picked on different days and from different blocks to allow for optimum ripening and multiple blending options, parcels of fruit for this Cabernet were separately fermented in 5 tonne open fermenters. On skin fermentation was completed before pressings were sent to barrel to complete fermentation in a 30% new French and 5% American oak combination.
Dense midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Elevated blackcurrant, black olive, mulberry and tobacco scents fill the nostrils with some spicy vanillin cedar and bay leaf notes also chiming in. Layered across the medium to full bodied palate with plenty of intensity are rich blackcurrant and mulberry fruits. Lingering underneath are notions of liquorice, vanillin cedar, tobacco and spicy bay infusions. Amply fleshed it has a sturdy, fine grained tannin structure which lends some firmness to the long, deeply fruited conclusion.

Pampero Aniversario Rum (700ml)VENEZUELAReduced from $139.99$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%"...takes you on a trip into desserts galore...seductive and delicious". - drinkhacker.com
As well as being the spiritual home to the famous rum-based medicinal bitters, Venezuela makes some seriously good barrel-aged golden and dark rums. Pampero Aniversario was first crafted in 1963 to commemorate the company’s 25th anniversary. Triple distilled via a continuous still, the blend is composed of approximately four to six year old rums aged in both whisky and sherry barrels. If it sounds young by world standards, keep in mind spirits mature roughly three times faster in the Amazonian climate than regions like Scotland or France. It shows in Aniversario's fabulous deep copper colour and stunning aromatics. You get a superb medley of praline, milk chocolate, dates, honeycomb and raw sugar that follows through with a graceful, silky delivery suggesting dates, honey and vanilla custard and a warming, spicy, new leather, pipe tobacco and honeycomb aftertaste. All up: a gorgeous middleweight style showcasing pitch perfect sweet-dry balance. The packaging is a plus. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Deep mahogany. Toffee, baked apple, walnut, glue, and tobacco aromas. Rich entry leads to a dryish medium-full body with treacle, spice, suede flavors. ...Pampero Aniversario is a Venezuelan rum, and one of only a handful I’ve ever tried. And like its comrade Santa Teresa 1796, it is exemplary.
Chocolate brown in color, the rum exudes nuttiness and dark, bittersweet chocolate on the nose. Fresh sugar coats the tongue as you taste, and Pampero takes you on a trip into desserts galore on the body — chocolate mousse, creme brulee, caramel pudding. The finish keeps going and going. Wood is there, but it’s sedate and stays in the background. The rum may look impossibly dark, but it actually spends only 4 to 6 years in old bourbon barrels. Really quite seductive and delicious, and at a price that’s more than fair for the quality you get. It also comes in a hard-to-miss leather satchel (it’s not a purse!), which makes it an unmistakable gift. - drinkhacker.com
...very smooth and easy to sip. There is little by way of any alcohol burn and it really does coat the taste buds with rich deep flavours. It reminds me very much of a good high cocoa content dark chocolate. Sweet yet slightly bitter with occasional hints of fruity flavour. The aged spirit gives a little smokiness and a slightly woody or perhaps leathery finish. In Dave Brooms book “Rum” he refers to one rum as “like old leather armchairs”. I kind of get that kind of vibe with this rum. To try and describe this rum stylistically is very difficult. The best I can really go with is a kind of beefed up Cuban/Spanish style rum. It has that sort of oily/smokey twang but it also has a big slab of rich flavour which is often so lacking in the lighter Cuban style. It’s not a million miles from Ron Zacapa. For the record I do not consider Ron Zacapa to be anywhere near as sweet as many make out. Maybe a few years ago it was but now, no not for me. As a nostalgia trip I’m going to mix the rum with ice and cola and maybe a squeeze of lime. Yes its very nice. I now know though that it is better on its own! No need to mix this little beauty. - thefatrumpirate.com

- Papalin Haiti 6 Year Old Vatted Rum (700ml)HAITI$189. 99Bottle$2279.88 DozenABV: 54.1%
Readers who purchased the previous edition will be familiar with Luca Gargano's Papalin project, marking a return to the ancient tradition of rum blending, and with a transparency that's welcomed by rum purists. The inaugural release was a four year old, while the latest is a six year old with a twist - ex Sherry casks have been employed. The blend of seven barrels from three Clairin distilleries includes Sajous, Vaval and Casimir. Each was pot distilled and tropically aged for six years at the Port-au-Prince distillery in casks that previously held Oloroso sherry from the House of Lustau. As you'd expect from the provenance, this is a rum big on aromatics and complexity, ranging from rooty (ginger), medicinal (cough drop) and slightly camphoraceous notes through to more typical Clairin characteristics of vegetal sugar cane, toffee, curry, turmeric and cocoa. It should be blast for lovers of agricole or anyone intrigued by Caribbean styles of yesteryear. 54.1% Alc./Vol.

Pikesville 110 Proof Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATESReduced from $179.99$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 55%"A rye of extraordinary excellence. And if there was an award just for the most salivating delivery of any whiskey, then this would win hands down." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024
Following the huge success of Heaven Hill's Rittenhouse 100 proof Rye, the re-invigorated Pikesville brand has made a similar comeback. First produced in Maryland in the 1890s, Pikesville was shuttered by Prohibition. As the rest of the industry closed up, the brand reemerged to become the last standing Maryland expression. The contemporary iteration is drawn from extra-aged barrels stored in prime warehouse locations. Whether you’re a straight rye fan or simply love the unique flavour it adds to cocktails like the Manhattan or Old-Fashioned, this 110-proof, six-year-old powerhouse will take your pleasure to new heights, beginning with piercing, peppery rye aromas including a minty edge that doesn't give up, complexed by unripe granny-smith, grainy accents and finally, sweeter vanillas. Vibrant, chewy and sustained, the flavours roll out in a text-book, fat, oily rye delivery, the controlled spices tempered by fresh oak and apple mint. This vivacious style clearly builds off Rittenhouse but takes it to the next level. Although the mash bill isn't stated, it's “at least 51% rye,” (corn and barley making up the remainder) and apparently two years older than Rittenhouse BIB - which would account for the step up in refinement. 55% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Pikesville finally fills a gap in the marketplace by being a readily available, easy to drink high proof rye with mass appeal that deserves a spot on everyone’s must try list. This is a fantastic addition to Heaven Hill’s rye lineup. While the proof is high, it serves to amplify the fantastic flavor profile rather than impose a lot of burn, making it very enjoyable neat. Additionally, while Pikesville contains a more fruit-forward flavor profile due to the fact that this is most likely a barely-legal rye, the high yet manageable proof helps add to the illusion that this is a spicier rye than it really is. This should allow both bourbon lovers and hardcore rye lovers alike to appreciate it. On paper this may seem simplistic in nature, but in execution, this is one of the best everyday ryes you can currently find on the shelf. Don’t hesitate to give this premium rye a try. - breakingbourbon.com
"...one of the aromas of the year... after that nose, the delivery just had to be majestic. And it is... those wonderful, bustling, fizzing spices... The most stunning of ryes and the best from Heaven Hill for some time. 97.5 points- Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2016

...Heaven Hill’s 80-proof standard Pikesville is a summer favorite, so I was eager to try this. A woody depth to it at 6 years old: 110 proof-hot, stewed plum and horehound candy, and sizzling rye spice behind it. It's a jawbreaker: full and hot in the mouth, with sweet grassy spice, bitter rye grain as it progresses, and crackling sugar near the end, just before it all smooths into a savory layered finish. Ron Zacapa Centenario X.O. Rum (700ml)Mixco, GUATEMALAReduced from $240.00$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 40%The crown jewel in the Zacapa line-up and the epitome of elegance in rum.
What started in the early part of the 20th century as an effort by a handful of enthusiastic entrepreneurs has evolved into a prosperous corporation with international recognition. Today the 'La Nacional' company has an extensive range of products which account for 98% of the domestic spirits market in Guatemala. Their rums marketed under the Ron Zacapa label stand out for two reasons: Instead of molasses, they're produced using sugarcane honey (fresh sugarcane juice condensed and filtered). Secondly, the rums are distilled at sea-level but aged in the town of Quetzaltenango at an elevation of 2300 metres.
Zacapa's top shelf blend of 6-25 year old rums is an exemplary example of the spirit that goes through a similar solera aging process to the popular Solera 23 with one notable exception: after a spell in ex-bourbon, ex-oloroso sherry, and ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, the final blend is finished in French oak casks previously used to age cognac (befitting of the XO moniker, but relatively meaningless in the rum world). It feels like a very old cognac or brandy on the nose with an almost ethereal lift of sticky date, dark chocolate, coffee bean and light golden syrup. The palate delights the senses with a fabulous rush of dates, molasses cake, mocha, honey, super-aged muscat and perfectly balanced spirit. The finish is drying and XO cognac-like. Tasting like a good proportion of seriously old material is in the mix, this is the epitome of elegance in rum with luxe presentation to match. 40% Alc./Vol.

Reminiscent of a fine Spanish brandy. 40% Alc./Vol. International review of Spirit Award: Gold Medal (2002) 94 points (Exceptional). - tastings.com
...This rum is a gorgeous, ruddy toffee color, perhaps a shade more amber than the standard 23. The nose, unsurprisingly, evokes more age, as well, with deeper notes of aged wine and seasoned oak that pair well with elements of dried fig, sticky prune, dark roast coffee, and creamy milk chocolate. The palate is still bright with all that citrusy, sherry-driven fruit, although a rich layer of dark brown sugar underpins things, adding a silky depth and gentle complexity. Coffee notes, nutty and lightly spiced, dominate the mid-palate before a reprisal of fruit on the long finish, this time more Cognac-driven with golden stone fruits and some poached pear. All told, it’s only a bit more impressive than the standard Zacapa 23, but that’s still saying something. A great special occasion sipping rum. If you can spare the shelf space. - drinkhacker.com
