Mataro is one of the original varieties planted in the Barossa, and for good reason, it has stood the test of time to still be one of the most versatile grapes available to Barossan Winemakers. It is very well suited to the varied Barossa soils have as well as the warm summers. Traditionally it is the latest ripening variety, meaning that it is picked in the cool of autumn when the vines are not stressed, and the fruit is in perfect condition. It has long been used as a blending component with Shiraz as well as in GSM wines, but in more recent times has begun to be showcased as an individual variety.
Fruit is sourced from two parts of Adrian Hoffmann’s Ebenezer vineyard located in the north of the Valley. The ‘Sand Block’ and ‘David’s Block’ were planted in 1999 & 2000 respectively from old vine select cuttings.
Excellent colour displaying a midnight black dark purple core with a vibrant dark purple hue. Violet led scents of ripe blueberries, plum, dark cherries and liquorice intermingle with subtle inky earth and fresh herb notes. The very moreish, medium bodied palate is layered with succulent blueberry, ripe dark plum and liquorice fruits which are very supple in their feel. Traces of inky earth, infusions of fresh herbs and light spice are also apparent. Vibrant acidity and silky tannins underpin the delicious fruits on the long finish.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.
