Over the last decade or so Sanguine Estate have steadily built a reputation as one of Heathcote’s top producers making rich, intensely flavoured wines that have brought a loyal following. Their entry level Shiraz ‘Progeny’ is consistently one of the districts best buys. Ben Riggs continues to consult the Hunter family in their endeavours. Maturation takes place in predominately French oak barriques, approximately 15% new, for a period of 12 months.

Rich, dense and opulently textured this is a very exuberant rendition of Sanguine’s Progeny.

Magnificent saturation of colour displaying an impenetrable inky black core with an equally deep dark purple black hue. Heady dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and blueberry fruits rise out of the glass with notions of vanillin oak, fennel and light pepper also evident. Warmer vintage conditions in 2018 have produced a more forward and open Progeny that’s rich, dense and exuberant. Opulently textured, the palate is awash with lush black cherry, liquorice and dark plum flavours which meld into subtlety smoked vanillin cedar, fennel and blackpepper elements. Silky tannins and bright youthful acidity underpin the lavish fruit. Fantastic depth and power with a long expressive finish that’s liberally doused with black fruits.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
