Atze's Corner is owned by sixth generation Barossa Valley vigneron, Andrew Kalleske. At the heart of the project are low-yielding 1912 and 1951 Barossa Valley Shiraz vines planted adjacent to the locally-known Atze's Corner, in an unassuming plot of land to the east of Nuriootpa on the valley floor. Fruit is also sourced from several other vineyards, also owned by the Kalleske family. Two of the Barossa Valley's prized sub regions make up 100% of the Shiraz in this wine - Ebenezer and Koonunga. Open, small-batch fermentation, hand plunging and pumping and minimal filtering and fining define Andrew's unobtrusive approach. Maturation takes place in a combination of new French oak (10%) with the balance in seasoned French and American oak for a period of 18 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Elevated aromatics of ripe blackberries, liquorice and black cherries interplay with smoky vanillin oak and blackpepper. Saturating the mouth are rich dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits which have a very plush feel and show superb depth, concentration and power. Elements of dark chocolate, subtly toasted vanillin oak and spice sit underneath. Velvet smooth tannins, concluding long, lush and sumptuous.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
