Over the last decade or so Sanguine Estate have steadily built a reputation as one of Heathcote’s top producers making rich, intensely flavoured wines that have brought a loyal following. Their entry level Shiraz ‘Progeny’ is consistently one of the districts best buys. Ben Riggs continues to consult the Hunter family in their endeavours. Maturation takes place in predominately French oak barriques, approximately 15% new, for a period of 12 months.

Sanguine’s Progeny Shiraz continues to rack up the bling with the just released 2017 already collecting 4 trophies.

The cooler 2017 vintage has produced a typically rich Progeny but with slightly more freshness and structure, as well as fantastic length. Impenetrable midnight black core with a deep dark red black hue. Gaining intensity with air, elevated blackberry, black cherry, plum and liquorice scents drift from the glass underscored by vanillin cedar, traces of fennel and pepper. Rich and impressively concentrated the palate boasts mouthfilling flavours of luscious blackberries, black cherries and liquorice which hold sway over a back drop of subtlety smoked vanillin oak, elements of fennel and spicy pepper. The richness of fruit counterpointed by a sturdy yet opulent feel, with perfectly integrated ripe yet slightly chewy tannins providing a great framework. Powers on to a long finish of blackberry, black cherry, liquorice, spicy smoky vanillin cedar, fennel and pepper. Winner of four trophies at the Heathcote wine show - best wine made and grown in Heathcote, best single vineyard, best Shiraz and best young Shiraz.
