Hugo wines are a family owned and operated winery with fifth generation member John Hugo in charge ably assisted by winemaker Renae Hirsch. Fruit for the 2017 Hugo Shiraz was primarily sourced from two estate blocks planted in 1972 and 1988 respectively with selection also included from the Reserve Block planted in 1969. Maturation took place in an equal mix of French and American oak hogsheads, 20% of which were new, for a period of 16 months.

Rich, yet not heavy, this marvellous McLaren Vale Shiraz has a refined, yet plush feel to it and boasts superb length.

Deep inky black core with a deep dark red black hue. Heady scents of liquorice and blackberry intermix with dark plum, subtle vanillin cedar, hints of dark chocolate, light fennel and pepper. The cooler 2017 vintage has imparted an air of refinement to what is otherwise a rich, plush palate. Medium to full bodied a bounty of opulent blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits are layered across the mouth underpinned by elements of spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and pepper. Silky smooth tannins with good underlying freshness. Concludes long and quite sumptuous yet also shows a high degree of finesse.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
