An equal parts blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Impenetrable inky black colour with a deep dark red black hue. Sailing out of the glass are potent black cherry, black raspberry and liquorice aromas followed by notions of scorched earth, incense, dried herbs and pepper. Rich, lush and powerful, the palate is awash with black cherry and black raspberry fruits which are backed by a ripe chewy tannin structure that gives the wine a muscular feel. Embedded on the back half are elements of scorched earth, infusions of incense, dried herbs and peppered meats. Excellent power and concentration with a generous aftertaste that has a meaty feel to it.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.
Alc. 14.5%

Other Reviews….
I reviewed the 2016s from Domaine les Aphillanthes in last year’s Southern Rhône report, but these latest 2017s are certainly in the same ballpark, if not a touch more elegant and seamless. As I said last year, readers looking for some of the best Côtes du Rhônes out there are well-advised to get on this estate’s bandwagon.
A blend of one-third each Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, the 2017 Côtes du Rhône Villages 3 Cépages has juicy, upfront fruit, medium to full body, and a beautiful elegance on the palate. Bright berry fruits, pepper, and floral notes all define the nose of this seamless, silky, beautiful wine.
