2017 Cullen Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

Certified organic, this excellent blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot was matured in French oak for an average of 6 months, 30% of the barrels being new. Opens with fantastic colour displaying a pitch black core and a deep dark red black tinged hue. Aromas of ripe red currants and mulberry spiral out of the glass closely followed by pencilly cedar, spicy tobacco and subtle bay leaf notes. Medium bodied, refined red currant and mulberry flavours have an elegant feel melding into infusions of bay leaf, cedary tobacco characters, light black olive and spice. Dryish finish with sturdy finely grained tannins imparting a slight sense of chalkiness on the lengthy aftertaste.

An 81/19% blend matured in French oak (30% new) for an average of 6 months. The colour is good, the bouquet expressive and very good, but it is the palate that really takes off, blackcurrant/cassis and bay leaf riding on a magic carpet of ripe tannins. This isn't the best wine in the Cullen line-up, but it arguably offers the best value. Drink by 2037.
