Dave Powell and son Callum have followed up their outstanding 2015 collection with another very impressive set of wines from the 2016 vintage. Fruit for this wine is sourced from mature (20+ year old) vines located in the Barossa Valley sub districts of Marananga, Seppeltsfield and Lyndoch Valley with maturation taking place in large format 4500 litre French oak foudres for a period of 15 months.

Densely coloured with an almost paint like cling to the walls of the glass, the wine features a totally impenetrable inky black core and an equally deep bright dark purple black hue. Intense freshly crushed blackberry, dark plum and liquorice aromas ooze out of the glass followed by inky vanillin cedar, a faint whiff of fennel and spice. Rich and flamboyant with voluptuously textured fruit but a vibrant fresh finish the mouth is flooded with crushed blackberries and dark plum intermixed with inky liquorice over vanillin cedar with subtle notions of fennel also chipping in before spice and pepper characters take over. Sturdy, slightly dryish, yet fine grained tannins will eventually fully integrate and become velvet like. Marvellous concentration and power with a long aftertaste of spicy, freshly crushed blackberries, dark plums, inky liquorice, vanillin cedar, graphite and pepper.
