Jean-Claude Marsanne is based in the town of Mauves, in the southern part of the Saint Joseph appellation. They own 6.8 hectares of steep terraced vineyards which are mostly hand hoed or horse ploughed (no tractors here!).

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a bright dark red black tinged hue. Aromas of dried meats, liquorice and peppered herbs overlay earthy graphite and spicy black olive notes. Quite fleshy in its feel and showing a good degree of elegance, the medium weighted palate has flavours of dark to black cherries and liquorice over scorched earth, dried meats and spicy pepper characters. Good concentration and richness with refined, slightly dryish tannins and a long savoury aftertaste of spicy dark to black cherries, liquorice, dried meats, earth and pepper. Excellent.
Cellar 5-6 years.
Alc. 13.5%

Other Reviews…..
From the older, southern part of Saint J. Dark cherry scents, flint and wet slate aromas, brambles and garrigue, a savouriness, a meatiness, a lot going on. Succulent in the palate, good concentration and then that hazy sort of powdery texture that speaks of rustic charm, though flavours are brooding and ripe and clear. Spice is a huge part of the wine, so is earthiness and savoury character. Glorious, old school expression.
