2016 Domaine des Escaravailles Heritage 1924 Rasteau

Impenetrable pitch black core with a very deep dark red black hue. Sailing out of the glass are liqueured blackberry and black cherry aromas which intermix with earth, new leather, hints of aniseed, dried herbs and pepper. Dense, rich and chewy this is about as powerful and opulent as it gets. Voluptuous blackberry, ripe black cherry and aniseed flavours saturate the palate with a back drop of scorched earth, traces of leather and loads of blackpepper. There’s a sternness to the tannins which give the wine a ripe chewy feel and impart a bit of grip to the finish. Lengthy pepper infused conclusion of opulent black fruits, scorched earth and spicy leather.

At the same quality level as the La Ponce, the Grenache-dominated 2016 Rasteau Héritage 1924 is more overtly powerful and full-bodied, with a flamboyant, deep, opulent profile that’s very much in the vintage. Blackberries, blueberries, crushed violets, garrigue and new saddle leather notes all emerge from this blockbuster that, despite its exuberance and richness, stays balanced, pure, and seamless. Don’t miss it.
