The Rocche dell’Annunziata vineyard, located on a steep hillside, is considered to be one of the most important sites in all of Barolo. Pietro Ratti calls the site a Grand Cru of La Morra. The wine is aged in French oak barriques in its first year and is then transferred to large Slavonian oak casks for its second year of maturation.
Deep very dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark to brick red hue. Showing good intensity the nose offers up dark cherry and subtle red currant scents tinged with perfumed notes of rose petals. Earthy dried herbs, leather and spice are also apparent. Rich dark cherry, ripe red currant and strawberry fruits are framed by a robust tannin structure which is slightly more sedate than the Conca. Outstanding power and concentration with elements of old cedar, earth, dried herbs and spicy tobacco in the background. Chewy finish with bright vibrant acidity and a long savoury aftertaste.
Cellar 6-8 years.
Pietro Ratti's 2015 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is the most structured and firmly textured of the Barolos presented in this tasting of new releases. This wine is tight and compact at its core, but it needs a little prodding and swirling of the glass before it hints at the grandeur and the layering of fruit nuances embedded in its very DNA. Just give it time, this wine requires a little extra patience before it fully blossoms. All those beautiful Nebbiolo complexities are hidden just below the surface and will emerge with more bottle aging. Only 5,000 bottles were made. Drink 2022-2040.
Monca Larner – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate
A chewy and polished red with berry and tile character and hints of plums. Medium-to full-bodied. Chewy tannins that are polished and firm. Very pretty. One of the best ever. Better after 2021.
