This vineyard is in a small bowl facing South/West and it lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. Pajè is slightly lower in altitude and the vineyard is more open to the Tanaro River influence, resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with a high calcium level. As a result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins and it is never shy in acidity. Pajè seems sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages and is particularly attractive after some ageing, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate.
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè shows a heavier center of gravity (compared to the Pora) with thicker concentration of dark fruit at the middle. The jump is not big, but it is noticeable, like one step up a ladder. This wine produces more ferrous earth and iron ore with plenty of dark fruit. The mouthfeel is less complicated and shorter too in this vintage, although the tannins feel firm and prominent. Between Pora and Pajè, I'd give a slight edge to Pora. Some 10,000 bottles were released.
Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (July 2020)
The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is starting to shut down in bottle, but the signatures are still very much present, namely acidity and structure that give depth while also providing terrific balance to the generosity of the year. The Pajè was much more expressive when I tasted it a few months ago.
Antonio Galloni - Vinous
Chewy, mineral, raspberry and slight over-ripe feel, a little warmth, cherry and grip, firm fine tannin grip on the finish. Excellent, but a bit breathy.
Gary Walsh - The Wine Front
Warm berries, rhubarb and pot pourri, new leather and warm spice. Big flavour, big swish of grippy, earthy tannins, finishes bergamot tea-like and very chewy. Lots of mouth-watering rose hip tea going on, chunky and booze soaked cherries chime in. Boozey, yep. Quite abrupt rush to the tannin wall that closes. Beautiful tannins are the final message.
