Campo de Borja (which rather grandly calls itself ‘The Empire of Garnacha’), is a DO of 6,000 hectares in Zaragoza province, between Navarra and Catalayud, in the broad, almost delta-like flood plains of Rio Ebro, after it departs la Rioja and before it reaches Priorat and its Mediterranean shore. Above these floodplains, the slopes leading up to the Moncayo mountain have a special microclimate among the 16 municipalities of the DO. Young gun winemaker, Isaac Fernandez works in the highest, most extreme parts of Campo de Borja that forces the vines to struggle to grow. The 40 plus year old bush vines for this wine sit at around 750m altitude, on a rugged, windy exposed hillside, the poor stony iron-rich red clay soils providing great structure to the finished wine. Fermentation is simple and cool in stainless steel, so as to retain natural acid freshness before 7 months maturation in used French oak.

Delivers a rich, juicy Rhone like profile at an amazing price.

Opaque dark red black colour with a vibrant dark red purple hue. Fragrant aromatics of black cherries, black raspberries and liquorice blossom from the glass underscored by subtle incense, scorched earth and spice notes. Rich and supple in the mouth with a ripe juicy textural feel the palate is flooded with succulent black raspberry, ripe dark cherry and liquorice flavours over a backdrop of scorched earth, incense like characters and spicy pepper. Slightly chewy on the finish with velvety tannins carrying the opulent fruit well. Excellent depth with a long spicy black raspberry, dark cherry, liquorice, scorched earth, dried herb, incense infused and pepper aftertaste. Spectacular value.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.
