Chateau Capbern (formerly Capbern Gasqueton) have been on a roll since the new owners took over the estate, along with Calon Segur, in 2012. Already blessed with prime vineyards close to heavyweights Montrose and Phelan Segur, their winemaking facilities have recently been rejuvenated and the wines have never looked better. Vineyards at the estate are planted to 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 30 years. Vinification takes place in stainless steel vats, malolactic fermentation in tank, and the wine is aged in 50% new French oak barrels for 18 months.

Superb depth of colour displaying an impenetrable pitch black core with a very deep dark red black hue. Pronounced aromatics of blackcurrant, subtle black cherry and mulberry are interwoven with cigar box, hints of graphite, scorched earth and spice. Medium to full in body, gorgeous rich blackcurrant fruit is carried by a back drop of vanillin cedar, earthy cigar box like elements, black olive and spice. Excellent structure and definition with slightly grippy yet fine grained tannins. Long spicy blackcurrant, cigar box, scorched earth, black olive and spicy dried herb aftertaste.
Cellar 6-8 years.
Alc. 13.5%

Other Reviews….
This is structured and very linear with superfine and polished tannins. It’s full-bodied yet reserved and held back with such tension and focus. Full-bodied, fine and chewy on the finish. Better in 2020.

Produced by the team of Calon Ségur, this wine is stylish and elegant while also full of the Saint-Estèphe tannic structure. Fresh and fruity, it is also firm and tannic. Drink this spicy, juicy wine from 2025.
