Winemaker Daniel Wilson sums up his 2014 vintage as follows “2014 was an interesting season here in Clare, in many ways it felt like we were heading for disaster. After a good thumping of rain in early February there was plenty of splitting around, eerily similar to 2011. As grape growers and winemakers, we collectively held our breath knowing that another decent rain event could allow the microbiological enemy to flourish. However fortunately, unlike 2011, we had mostly fine and dry conditions following allowing the berries to remain disease free for the most part. Good canopy management and fungicide application showed their value.

My Watervale riesling was picked on the 20th February which was early by comparison to others. The fruit looked tremendous in the winery, full of aroma and bright green in colour. Juice was tested at 10.9 baume, pH 3.33 and TA 6.4 g/L. I added 0.75g/L of tartaric acid and felt satisfied that I'd made the decision to pick early and ignore the helpful advice of others. I'm sure the acid would've declined quite quickly and later picked wines (from Watervale) would've required much larger acid adjustment, something I strive to avoid.

Brilliant water like colour with a faint greenish tinge on the edges and a watery hue. Intense lime and citrus aromas bound from the glass followed by nuances of orange rind and talc. Mouthfilling flavours of lime and citrus dominate the front palate with a back drop of subtle orange rind, talc and mineral. Excellent fruit concentration with a clean crisp dry finish. Long aftertaste of lime, citrus and talc.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.
