Principia was founded in 1995 by Darrin Gaffy. A passionate, intelligent, quirky winemaker and vigneron, Gaffy allows terroir to shine through his wines through hand-picking of the vineyard, wild yeast fermentation and vinification without the aid of any pumps or machinery. 2014 was a tough vintage for fruit set reducing yields to one third of normal. Maturation took place in French oak for approximately 18 months, all in second and third use barrels.

Principia’s finest Pinot Noir yet.

Semi translucent dark red colour with a dark crimson hue. Fragrantly scented nose with violet, ripe red cherry and ripe strawberry aromas overlaying a complex mix of fresh herbs, subtle anise infusions, faint sour cherries and spicy cedar notes. Within its light, supplely textured frame there’s tremendous richness and power with ripe red cherries and strawberries in the driver’s seat over traces of sour cherries (which provide a sense of freshness), fresh herb infusions, a subtle meatiness, anise and spicy cedar. Bright finish with beautifully integrated, silky smooth tannins. Very long aftertaste of ripe red cherries, strawberries, traces of sour cherries, a light meatiness and spicy cedar.
Cellar 5-6 years.
Alc 13%
