A success story of long term agricultural diversification, the Majella property was originally owned by Frank Lynn, and bought in 1960 by his nephew, George, for a prime lamb enterprise. Viticulture was not on the agenda until 1968, when George, encouraged by his friend, Eric Brand (of Brand's Laira fame) decided it would complement the sheep. Eric purchased the fruit for Hardy's, but the deal later fell through and for a couple of vintages tonnes of premium grapes were left to rot. The risk ultimately paid off. Majella have since had a long contract supplying Wynns and today, plantings have continued to expand, with Cabernet the flagship varietal. This wine was produced from mature vines planted between 1968-1974.

A top notch Cabernet from one of Coonawarra’s leading Estates

Aged for 18 months in a combination of new and second use French oak hogsheads the wine displays a totally opaque black dark red colour with a bright dark crimson black tinged hue. Fragrant blackcurrant and liquorice aromas laced with choc mint are followed by more subtle cedary tobacco and spice notes. Medium to full bodied the palate possesses excellent fruit richness within a typically elegant Coonawarra framework. Mouthfilling flavours of blackcurrant decorated with choc mint are to the fore underpinned by some bay leaf, vanillin cedar and spice. Very finely grained, yet well-structured tannins are cleverly disguised. Long aftertaste of blackcurrant, bay leaf and mint infusions, vanillin cedar, subtle earth and spice.
Cellar 6-8 years.
Alc 14.5%
