Walnut Block mark a pleasing departure from industrial New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The vines are trellised on the Scott-Henry canopy system, which allows maximum light and exposure. The grapes are all hand picked and grown to a yield of 3.5 tonnes per acre. Fruit is first gently whole bunch pressed and predominantly fermented in stainless steel with cultured yeast. A portion is fermented with wild yeasts in old French Barriques, which contributes additional layers of complexity.
Brilliant pale straw colour with watery hue. Expressive bouquet of herbaceous grassy gooseberry intermixed with some passionfruit followed by some spicy asparagus and citrus end notes. The palate possesses excellent concentration and textural mouthfeel with flavours of ripe gooseberry and passionfruit overlaid with some herbaceous grassy characters and a long citrus finish. Clean crisp acidity with long passionfruit, herbaceous grassy gooseberry and citrus aftertaste.
Drink over 1-2 years (2013-2015).
