Planted in 1903 by one of the early Barossa Valley pioneers, Bill Hoffmann, these centennial vines have been owned by Italian migrant Domenico Martino since 1966 with Torzi Matthews acting as care taker for the last 10 years. Yields were an exceptionally low 1.2 tons per acre and as a result total production was limited to only 200 dozen. Maturation took place in a combination of new (10%) and seasoned French oak barrels for 16 months. This is an exceptional buy given the vines age, quality of fruit and its relatively modest price tag.

A seamless integration of richness, power and complexity

Superb depth and density of colour displaying an impenetrable inky black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Intense aromatics of ripe dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and subtle hints of fennel waft from the glass followed by some dark chocolate, faintly smoked cedar, dried herbs and spice. Luscious, rich and supple the palate boasts magnificent concentration and fruit purity with waves of succulent fruit cascading across the palate. Totally mouthfilling flavours of ripe dark plums, blackberries and liquorice with subtle fennel and dark chocolate intrusions are followed by nuances of smoky oak, spicy meats and pepper. Satiny tannins, exceptional power and a very long lasting aftertaste of ripe dark plums, liquorice, blackberries, dark chocolate, delicate fennel, spicy dried meats and smoky cedar.
