Named in honour of John “The Gaffer” Riggs (1814-1902), the great-great-great grandfather of winemaker Ben Riggs, this McLaren Vale blended Shiraz was made to acknowledge 150 years of the Riggs family’s rich farming heritage in South Australia. Grapes for “The Gaffer” have been sourced from vineyards from a variety of McLaren Vale’s best sites including Goss Corner, Edgehill, Piebald Gully, Braden’s and Penny’s Hill.

‘An early indicator of the great things to come from the 2012 McLaren Vale vintage.’

The Gaffer Shiraz is sealed with a pink stelvin capsule as with every bottle sold the Mr Riggs team make a charitable contribution to Breast Cancer Research. Made with 30% new French oak this wine displays a totally opaque inky black colour showing excellent depth with dark crimson red black hue. The nose offers up pronounced aromas of liquorice, black plums, ripe blackberry and vanillin confectionary with subtle blackpepper end notes. Richly textured and well endowed with an abundance of succulent fruit the palate is packed with liquorice, dark plum and blackberry flavours followed by some subtle vanillin oak and spice. Fleshy plush mouthfeel with velvet smooth tannins. Very long liquorice, blackberry, subtle vanillin oak and spice aftertaste.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.
