John Duval is most well known for his 29 years spent winemaking at Penfolds where he worked alongside some of the countries all time great winemakers including Max Schubert. Appointed chief winemaker in 1986 he oversaw the production of some of the great vintages of Penfolds Grange. Now focused on his own label in the Barossa he also has several overseas projects in the USA and Chile. The wine was matured for 16 months, with one third being in new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300 litres) and the balance in 2, 3 and 4 year old hogsheads.

Totally opaque inky black dark purple colour with deep very dark purple hue. The nose exhibits scents of blackberry, dark plum and liquorice over a toasty oak background followed by some confectionary and black pepper. Possessing an air of regal refinement not normally associated with Barossa Shiraz the palate delivers flavours of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum over a back drop of lightly toasted cedary vanillin oak and spice. Velvety tannin structure with long persistent aftertaste of blackberry, liquorice, subtle lightly toasted cedary vanillin oak and pepper.
Cellar 6-8 years (2019-2021).
