2012 Isole e Olena Cepparello

Cepparello is one of Italy's most iconic wines produced entirely from Sangiovese.

Opaque black dark red colour with a very dark red hue. Alluring and perfumed the nose offers up aromatics of violets and dark cherries laced with subtle dried herb, liquorice and leather notes which overlay nuances of earth and spicy cedar. Complex and elegant with an understated level of richness the palate is graced with flavours of spicy dark cherries, violet infusions, dried herbs, some faint tobacco, earthy cedar and leather all seamlessly intermeshed with one another. Excellent depth with the refined richness of the wine making it a very savoury offering. Very fine grained tannins, beautifully integrated with the fruit. Long aftertaste of spicy dark cherries, dried herbs, cedar, earth and leather. An Outstanding Cepparello.

The 2012 Cepparello is magnificent. Radiant, pliant and super-expressive, the 2012 offers magnificent intensity, with silky tannins wrapped around a core of rich, dark-toned fruit. The intensity of the fruit suggests a warm vintage, but the structure is more medium in body and typical of a cooler year. Today, the 2012 gives the impression it will drink well pretty much upon release, but history has taught me Cepparello often shuts down in bottle. Either way, the 2012 is superb. Drink 2020-2037.
