Castellare di Castellina was established in 1968 after the consolidation of 5 different estates in the Siena region, brought together by Paolo Panerai, the Italian press magnate. Panerai envisioned a typical Tuscan setting and narrowed the varietal pool to specimens thought to be native of the area, and as of today the estate is still engaged in a research program with the University of Florence, in a bid to preserve and strengthen the Tuscan viticultural heritage.
Within the Chianti Classico Denominazione, Castellare di Castellina is a blend of Sangioveto and Canaiolo, as tradition would want it, with Sangioveto thought to be the original clone of Tuscan Sangiovese.

Deep dark red colour with a tinge of black and dark red hue. The nose shows good perfumed lift with scents of dark cherries intermixed with violets followed by some earthy cedar and spice. Light to medium weight with a soft rounded mouthfeel, this very savoury and elegant Chianti has flavours of dark cherries, light leather, some earthy cedar and spice. Very fine grained beautifully integrated tannins. Long dark cherry, light leather, subtle earth and spice aftertaste.
Drink over the next 2-3 years (2014-2017).
