Named in honour of John “The Gaffer” Riggs (1814-1902), the great-great-great grandfather of winemaker Ben Riggs, this McLaren Vale blended Shiraz was made to acknowledge 150 years of the Riggs family’s rich farming heritage in South Australia. Grapes for “The Gaffer” have been sourced from vineyards from a variety of McLaren Vale’s best sites including Goss Corner, Edgehill, Piebald Gully, Braden’s and Penny’s Hill.
According to Ben Riggs the 2010 vintage has produced of the best fruit for “The Gaffer” since the first vintage in 2004.
Totally opaque, black crimson colour with deep, black crimson hue. The nose displays ripe blackberry and plum top notes followed by a touch of liquorice with some spice and cedar end notes. Full bodied the palate is loaded with rich, ripe, succulent flavours of ripe blackberry, dark plum and liquorice followed by some spicy characters. Very fine grained, well integrated tannin structure. Excellent persistence with long, joosy, dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and spicy pepper aftertaste.
Drink over the next 4-5 years (2012-2017)
Alc 14.5%
